A Historic Visit Between Churches
A ten-member delegation from the Richmond First Baptist Church in Virginia, United States, has arrived in Liberia as guests of the Mount Galilee Baptist Church in Careyburg, Montserrado County. This visit is a key part of the Mount Galilee Baptist Church’s 169th Anniversary Celebration, marking a significant moment in the history of both churches.
The historical connection between the two churches is deeply rooted in the legacy of Baptist Missionary Lott Carey. He was originally sent from the Richmond First Baptist Church to Liberia 169 years ago to spread the gospel. His work laid the foundation for what would become the Mount Galilee Baptist Church, which continues to thrive today.
During the welcoming program, Rev. Dr. James Jim Somerville, Pastor of the Richmond First Baptist Church, spoke about the importance of this visit. He emphasized that Lott Carey and his contemporaries built a strong spiritual foundation for the current generation of believers. “It is now time for the present generation to carry the torch that has been passed on to them,” he said, highlighting the responsibility of continuing the mission started by their predecessors.
Rev. Jimmy Diggs, Pastor of Mount Galilee Baptist Church, expressed the congregation’s excitement about the visit. He described it as a historic and emotional moment for both churches. “This visit is not only significant to our church but also to the people of Careyburg,” he said. He added that the city itself was named after Lott Carey, the missionary from Richmond, further emphasizing the deep ties between the two communities.
Mydea White-Simmons, Chairperson of the Deacon Board at Mount Galilee Baptist Church, highlighted the contributions of the church’s members over the years. She noted that many have held prominent roles in government, business, and society. This reflects the lasting impact of the church’s teachings and the values it instills in its members.
Representing the local government, Mayor Edwin Urey of Careyburg welcomed the visiting delegation. He expressed hope that the visit would strengthen the relationship between the City of Virginia in the United States and Careyburg. “We are hopeful that this connection will boost relations and cooperation between our two cities,” he remarked. This sentiment underscores the potential for future collaboration and mutual support between the two regions.
