Appointment of Professor Edward Brenya as Chairman of the Governing Council of Kumasi Technical University

Professor Edward Brenya, Head of the department of history, political science and public administration at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been appointed as the chairman of the governing council of the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). This significant appointment marks a new chapter in his distinguished career as an academician and leader.

Prof. Brenya is one of the many beneficiaries of the prestigious Otumfuo Osei Tutu education scholarship, which enabled him to pursue his studies at Ohio University in the United States. His journey from a promising student to a respected academic highlights the transformative power of this scholarship program.

In a statement following the announcement of his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Brenya expressed his gratitude and emphasized that this elevation was a testament to the profound impact of the scholarship fund established by the Asantehene. He noted that the Otumfuo scholarship scheme has provided educational opportunities to over 20,000 individuals, enabling them to achieve their academic aspirations and build successful careers.

The achievements of the scholarship recipients are evident across various sectors, including education, law, and politics. Many of these individuals have taken on influential roles, contributing significantly to the development of Ghana.

Prof. Brenya highlighted that the vision for education championed by Otumfuo had not only transformed his life but also played a crucial role in the broader development of the nation. He stressed that education remains a pivotal driver of progress, as illustrated by the remarkable accomplishments of the scheme’s beneficiaries.

Several notable individuals have benefited from the Otumfuo Education Fund. Among them are:

  • Dr (Mrs) Mercy Badu, a Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry at KNUST;
  • Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission;
  • Dr Kingsley Antwi Boasiako, General Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority in Tema;
  • Justice Osei Tutu, an Appeals Court Judge;
  • Mr Kofi Achinah, a Pharmacist at Nyaho Medical Center in Accra;
  • Mr Justice Brobbey, the Curator of the Manhyia Palace Museum.

As the newly appointed Chairman of the KsTU Governing Council, Prof. Brenya has called on all, especially past beneficiaries of the Otumfuo Education Fund, to support the current Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation in furthering the vision of His Royal Majesty. He expressed deep appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for facilitating his personal aspirations and extended his thanks to President John Dramani Mahama and Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, for the appointment.

Prof. Brenya pledged to work diligently towards advancing the development of KsTU in alignment with the President’s resetting agenda. His leadership is expected to bring new energy and direction to the university, ensuring its continued growth and contribution to the national development agenda.
