PDP Demands U.S. Safeguard Nigeria’s Democracy

Growing Concerns Over Nigeria’s Democracy

An organisation affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the PDP Like-Minds Group, has raised urgent concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. The group has called on the United States government to take action in response to what it describes as a growing threat to the nation’s democratic processes.

During a peaceful demonstration at the US Embassy in Abuja, the group, led by its South-South Coordinator, Ebiowei Amakiri, urged the administration of President Donald Trump to use its diplomatic influence to help protect Nigeria’s democracy. The protest, which drew large numbers of participants, was marked by a strong show of solidarity and concern for the future of democratic governance in the country.

The protesters delivered a letter addressed to the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Richard Mills. The document, dated November 4, 2025, and titled “Appeal for the United States to Intervene in Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democracy,” expressed deep concern over what the group described as a coordinated effort to weaken democratic institutions through corruption, intimidation, and institutional compromise.

The letter highlighted the actions of the ruling party, which the group claims are working in collaboration with elements within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and segments of the judiciary. These actions, according to the group, have created an atmosphere of fear, suppression, and injustice. The letter warned that if these developments continue unchecked, they could threaten the very survival of democratic governance in Nigeria.

The PDP Like-Minds Group accused certain political actors of manipulating electoral processes and engaging in judicial misconduct aimed at silencing opposition voices and undermining political pluralism. The group emphasized the importance of democratic values and called on the United States to use its diplomatic influence and partnership platforms to help save Nigeria’s democracy from total collapse.

  • The letter stated:
“Your moral voice and proactive engagement can serve as a stabilising force to ensure that democratic values, human rights, and justice remain protected in our nation.”

The group expressed confidence that timely intervention from Washington would send a strong message to those who abuse power that the international community is watching and will not stand by while Nigeria’s democracy is destroyed from within.

Broader Implications and International Response

Similar letters were also delivered to key figures in Nigeria, including the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Gautier Mignot; the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun. This demonstrates the group’s commitment to addressing the issue at multiple levels, both domestically and internationally.

PUNCH Online reports that since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, concerns have persisted over cross-party defections and the perceived erosion of institutional checks and balances. These issues have fueled ongoing debates about the health of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the role of external actors in supporting or influencing the political landscape.

The PDP Like-Minds Group’s appeal highlights the growing anxiety among civil society groups and political organisations about the state of democracy in Nigeria. As the nation continues to navigate complex political challenges, the need for transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles becomes increasingly critical.

The group’s call for international support underscores the interconnected nature of global politics and the role that foreign governments can play in shaping domestic outcomes. While the United States and other nations may not directly intervene in internal affairs, their diplomatic engagement and public statements can have a significant impact on the political climate.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Nigerian government and its institutions will respond to these concerns. The continued efforts of groups like the PDP Like-Minds Group will be essential in ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and that democratic values are upheld.
