Stay Independent, Uphold Integrity, CJN Calls for Code of Conduct Tribunal

Leadership and Integrity in the Code of Conduct Tribunal

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has emphasized the importance of maintaining independence and integrity within the Code of Conduct Tribunal. This call to action was made during a meeting with members of the Tribunal in her office in Abuja, where she met with the Chairman, Mainasara Umar.

During the meeting, Umar sought the support of the CJN to improve the efficiency of the Tribunal and strengthen its ability to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities. He highlighted concerns about the current state of the Tribunal’s facilities but noted that efforts are underway to address these issues. Additionally, he requested the backing of the judiciary’s leadership to ensure the Tribunal receives the necessary resources to function effectively.

In response, Justice Kekere-Ekun encouraged the Tribunal to adopt innovative and practical strategies to tackle operational challenges, especially the backlog of pending cases. She also reminded the Tribunal to operate strictly within the jurisdiction outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Furthermore, she advised collaboration with the Code of Conduct Bureau to promote compliance with asset declaration requirements.

Promoting Compliance and Proactive Measures

The CJN suggested that both institutions take proactive steps, such as sending timely reminders to public officers and institutions, to ensure that declarations are submitted before the deadline. This would help maintain transparency and accountability among public officials.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also reminded the Tribunal members of their oath of office and the critical role they play in upholding the law without fear or favor. “Remember always that the credibility of the Tribunal, and indeed the entire judicial system, rests on the integrity and impartiality of its adjudicators. Let your actions inspire confidence in the institution you now lead,” she said.

Enhancing Capacity Through Training

In addition to these recommendations, the CJN encouraged the Tribunal to take advantage of training opportunities at the National Judicial Institute. She highlighted the importance of seminars and workshops aimed at enhancing the capacity of both members and supporting staff. These initiatives would not only improve the efficiency of the Tribunal but also reinforce its commitment to justice and fairness.

Conclusion

The dialogue between the CJN and the Code of Conduct Tribunal underscores the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct and efficiency within the judiciary. As the Tribunal continues to face various challenges, the guidance provided by Justice Kekere-Ekun serves as a reminder of the critical role it plays in upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.
