Israeli Military Preparations and Regional Tensions
The Israeli military is reportedly preparing for a potential large-scale operation aimed at weakening Hezbollah and compelling both the group and the Lebanese government to reach a “stable agreement” with Israel. This development was reported by an Israeli media outlet, which cited senior officials as confirming that there are already existing plans in place for such a move.
According to the report, the Israeli army is considering the possibility of entering combat in the near future. The outlet highlighted that the U.S. has conveyed a message to Lebanon, urging diplomatic solutions to prevent a crisis. However, the U.S. is also backing Israel’s military strategies, indicating that if a diplomatic resolution is not achieved, American support for an Israeli military operation would be forthcoming.
The new military initiative appears to have been developed through dialogue and coordination with the United States. The U.S. has sent a clear message to Lebanon: reach an agreement and disarm Hezbollah. This shows efforts to prevent the escalation of the crisis through diplomacy, but it also signals that the U.S. will not hesitate to support an Israeli military action if necessary.
The primary objective of any potential military engagement, according to the report, is to undermine Hezbollah’s attempts to rebuild its capabilities. It aims to send a strong message to both Hezbollah and the Lebanese government that Israel is serious about its demands regarding the issue of disarmament.
A senior Israeli official reportedly told the outlet, “Hezbollah will not be allowed to grow stronger. They will not return to October 6 (2023). We will increase the attacks and re-enter the fighting if necessary.” This statement underscores the determination of Israeli leadership to take decisive action if needed.
Escalating Tensions and Military Operations
The report suggests that the peak of tensions is expected to occur in about a month, when the Lebanese Army’s operation to destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure south of the Litani River is set to conclude. If the Lebanese government declares that the area designated for the army has been cleared, Israel is likely to reject these claims, leading to a significant rise in tensions.
In recent weeks, Israel has intensified its attacks in Lebanon, targeting both Hezbollah operatives and alleged infrastructure linked to the group. According to the latest intelligence from Israel, Hezbollah continues to amass missiles, rockets, artillery, and other combat equipment. These weapons are arriving through smuggling routes from Syria, which remain partially active, and via sea. At the same time, some of these weapons are being manufactured within Lebanon itself.
Following the recent ceasefire agreement, the Lebanese government assigned the army the task of centralizing weapons under state control, effectively aiming to disarm Hezbollah south of the Litani River by the end of 2025. However, the report highlights that the Lebanese Army has not been effective in fulfilling this task.
Challenges in Disarmament Efforts
The inefficiency of the Lebanese Army is particularly evident in the central region of the country and in the south, where Hezbollah members are not being arrested by the Lebanese forces. In fact, there are significant difficulties in locating the thousands of rockets that the organization still possesses, according to estimates.
This lack of progress raises concerns about the ability of the Lebanese government to meet its obligations under the ceasefire agreement. The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further conflict if diplomatic efforts fail to produce results.
