Global Leaders Convene in Belém for COP30 Climate Summit
Dozens of world leaders have arrived in Belém, Brazil, as preparations are underway for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP30. This significant event is set to take place over two days, with discussions focused on urgent strategies to mitigate global warming.
Among the notable attendees from Europe are German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Alongside them, top officials from the European Union and the United Nations will also be present. The host nation, Brazil, has positioned this year’s conference as the “COP of Truth,” emphasizing the need for tangible outcomes in the global fight against climate change.
Despite the high expectations, the political landscape remains challenging, with ongoing conflicts and economic issues diverting global attention. The United States, under the leadership of former President Donald Trump, continues to advocate for fossil fuels and has opted not to send a high-level delegation to COP30.
During the summit, world leaders are anticipated to unveil a new multibillion-dollar fund aimed at protecting tropical forests—often referred to as the planet’s “green lungs.” These ecosystems play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and maintaining biodiversity.
According to the environmental organization WWF, nearly seven million hectares of forest were lost in 2024, despite global commitments to halt deforestation by 2030. This alarming trend underscores the urgency of the discussions taking place at COP30.
The conference will also prioritize several key areas:
