Nigeria’s Debut at the 2025 World Sambo Championships

Nigeria is set to participate in its second edition of the World Sambo Championships, which will be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from November 7 to November 9. This prestigious event is organized by the Fédération Internationale de Sambo (FIAS) and serves as the pinnacle of competition for Sport Sambo, Combat Sambo, and Blind Sambo.

The Nigerian team consists of three athletes who will compete in the Combat and Blind Sambo categories. Each athlete brings unique experience and determination to the tournament.

Athletes Representing Nigeria

Fatai Balogun will represent Nigeria in the men’s 88kg Combat Sambo category. His presence highlights the growing strength of Nigerian sambo athletes on the global stage. Meanwhile, Samuel Kekere is making a significant impact as the first African competitor in the Blind Sambo category. He will compete in the men’s 64kg event, showcasing his skills and resilience.

Sodiq Ajibade is set to make his debut in the men’s 98kg Blind Sambo category. Ajibade has expressed high expectations for his performance, aiming for a podium finish that would bring pride to Nigeria. His participation marks an important step forward for the country’s sambo community.

Kekere’s Perspective

Samuel Kekere shared his excitement about returning to the World Sambo Championships. He praised the Fédération Internationale de Sambo for their efforts in promoting the sport globally. Additionally, he acknowledged the support provided by Sheriff Hammed, who played a crucial role in facilitating the team’s participation in the event.

Event Structure and Prizes

This year’s championships will feature elite sambists from around the world competing in three distinct categories: Sport Sambo, Combat Sambo, and Blind Sambo. The prize fund for the event totals $341,000, with equal rewards for all events. Gold medallists will receive $4,000, silver medallists $3,000, and bronze medallists $2,000.

The competition format varies across the categories. Sport Sambo will include group stages with repechage rounds, ensuring that athletes have multiple chances to advance. In contrast, Combat Sambo will be conducted without repechage rounds, adding an element of direct competition.

Leadership and Representation

Loveth Howell, President of the Sambo Association of Nigeria, and Vice President Sheriff Hammed are expected to attend the World Congress alongside the athletes. Their presence underscores the importance of the event for the development of sambo in Nigeria.
