Ogun Golf Boss Urges Govt to Fulfill Promises to Abeokuta Club

Ogun State Golf Association Calls for Government Support

The chairman of the Ogun State Golf Association, Chief Adewunmi Adefolu, has urged the Ogun State government to honor its commitments to the Abeokuta Golf Club. This appeal comes ahead of the National Sports Festival, which was held in Abeokuta in May. The golf club is still waiting for essential equipment and support that was promised earlier in the year.

Adefolu highlighted the need for a dredger, pumps, slashers, and tractors to maintain the golf course properly. “Because we have a lake here, we need a dredger. We also need pumps, slashers, and tractors. And we have been waiting since then. The promise was made in February and reconfirmed in April. Even when we finished the National Sports Festival in May, the Director General, National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade reconfirmed it. And we are still waiting,” he said.

Despite these promises, the club continues to rely on member contributions to sustain its operations. Adefolu emphasized that the golf course, built in 1986, is government property. “If they made a promise and did not fulfill it, what can I do? But I’m appealing that the government should please look into that and do something for Abeokuta Golf Club,” he added.

The chairman also pointed out that golf played a significant role in Ogun State’s strong performance at the festival. “For once, in the history of golf in the National Sports Festival, Ogun State came first after so many years,” he said.

Addressing Misconceptions About Golf

Adefolu lamented the misconception that golf is an elitist sport. He noted that the club depends entirely on member subscriptions to maintain its facilities, which cost about N20 million monthly. “Golf is not just for the wealthy. It’s a sport that requires investment and support from all levels,” he said.

He also called on the government to extend support to golf associations, similar to how it supports football. “There is hardly a state government that does not have a football team. No state government has a golf team. It is state associations that are solely responsible,” he said.

The Need for Government Involvement

The chairman stressed the importance of government involvement in supporting sports beyond traditional ones like football. “Golf is a vital part of our sporting culture, and it deserves the same level of attention and resources as other sports,” Adefolu said.

He reiterated his call for the government to act on its promises. “We are not asking for much, just the support that was promised. If the government can provide this, it will go a long way in ensuring the sustainability of the golf club and the promotion of the sport in the state.”

Future Prospects for Golf in Ogun State

Looking ahead, Adefolu expressed hope that the government would take a more active role in promoting golf. “With the right support, we can create a thriving golf community in Ogun State. This will not only benefit the sport but also contribute to the overall development of the state,” he said.

He also encouraged members and supporters of the club to continue their efforts in maintaining the facilities. “While we wait for government support, we must not lose hope. Our commitment to the sport is unwavering,” Adefolu concluded.
