Major League Baseball Players Accused of Match-Fixing Scandal
A major scandal has emerged in Major League Baseball (MLB) involving two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. The allegations suggest that both players were involved in illegal sports betting activities by tampering with pitches during games. The official website of MLB stated that New York prosecutors have charged Clase and Ortiz with tampering with pitches in MLB games. They are accused of conspiring to throw designated balls during matches, which resulted in the first batter facing a pitch that either went out of the strike zone or landed in the dirt. The alleged transaction reportedly involved $12,000 (approximately 17.45 million won).
According to The Athletic, the indictment released by prosecutors spans 23 pages. Clase and Ortiz are accused of unfairly profiting from manipulating pitching results in advance during MLB games from May 2023 to June this year. They face four charges, including manipulation of the economy and money laundering. The report also mentions that their unfair profits were at least $400,000 (about 580 million won).
Joseph Nossela Jr., a federal prosecutor in New York, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the defendants undermined the honest services of the Cleveland Guardians and Major League Baseball. He highlighted that honesty, integrity, and fairness are the core values of professional sports. “When corruption penetrates sports, the public cannot be trusted,” he said. “We will continue to vigorously deal with those who corrupt sport in illegal ways.”
The Cleveland club has issued an official statement expressing its commitment to fully cooperate with related agencies and Major League Baseball while the investigation is ongoing.
Clase’s fall from grace is particularly shocking. He signed a five-year, $20 million guaranteed contract with Cleveland in 2022. In 2025, his annual salary alone was 4.9 million dollars (about 7.1 billion won). He has consistently topped 40 saves for three consecutive years since 2022 and was named an All-Star for the third consecutive year. Ortiz, too, was considered a promising player in the team’s next generation.
If convicted, both players could face severe consequences. They may be permanently expelled from Major League Baseball. The league has established strict policies, stating that if a player, referee, club, or league official bets any amount on a baseball game, they will be permanently disqualified.
