Trump’s Warning: US Couldn’t Act in Africa Without Nigeria’s Approval – Obasanjo

A Reflection on Nigeria’s Past Influence and Current Challenges

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made a significant statement regarding Nigeria’s historical role in Africa, emphasizing the country’s past influence and its relationship with the United States. During an event in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo highlighted how, under his leadership, the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter could not act in Africa without Nigeria’s knowledge.

This remark was made during the Presidential Youth Mentorship Retreat (6.0), organized by the Youth Development Centre, which is part of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL). The context of this statement comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding President Donald Trump’s military invasion threat against Nigeria.

The Context of Trump’s Threats

In October 2024, Trump criticized the continued killings targeting Christians in Nigeria, declaring that the U.S. was ready to send its military if the federal government failed to stop these attacks by jihadist groups. This declaration sparked varied reactions from both the Nigerian government and prominent leaders and religious organizations.

The federal government dismissed Trump’s claims, asserting that insecurity in the country affects all religious groups. While Obasanjo did not directly address the controversy, he subtly referenced how the U.S., under Carter, viewed Nigeria with high regard.

A Friendship Between Leaders

Obasanjo and Carter were known for their close friendship. Carter, who passed away in December 2024 at the age of 100, was honored by Obasanjo in a memorial service held in Abeokuta earlier this year. During the event, Obasanjo praised the late U.S. President, highlighting his contributions and the strong bond between the two leaders.

Nigeria’s Historical Role in Africa

Obasanjo reflected on Nigeria’s historical position as a leader in Africa. He stated that from the time of independence, the world, particularly America, regarded Nigeria as a leading nation on the continent. However, he noted that Nigeria lost some of this confidence before the Murtala-Obasanjo military regime restored it.

During his tenure as Head of State, Obasanjo recalled that Carter, as U.S. President, would not take any action on African soil without informing the Nigerian government. Although they did not seek permission, Carter would always inform Nigeria about his actions.

Lessons from the Past

Obasanjo emphasized that during his presidency, three American presidents visited Nigeria, and none of them faced any issues or losses. He questioned what they saw in Nigeria that made them return with positive experiences.

He also pointed out that after independence, the world viewed Nigeria as a rising giant. However, this perception waned over time. It was only when Murtala and Obasanjo took power that Nigeria regained its former standing.

Conclusion

Obasanjo’s remarks serve as a reminder of Nigeria’s historical significance and its potential to play a crucial role in African affairs. His comments also highlight the importance of maintaining strong international relationships, especially with key global powers like the United States. As Nigeria continues to navigate its current challenges, the lessons from the past can provide valuable insights into building a more stable and influential future.
