The Climate Crisis and the Need for Global Solidarity
The entire world is currently facing a climate crisis, with natural disasters becoming increasingly frequent. This year, a major wildfire broke out in Andong during the spring season. The climate crisis is not confined to any single nation; it is a global challenge that demands collective reflection and action. At a recent event, astronomer Lee Myeong-hyun emphasized the importance of “coexistence,” “solidarity,” and “reflection” as key solutions to address issues like global warming. Over 250 attendees, including students from Andong Girls’ High School, were present at the conference room of the Andong International Convention Center in Gyeongbuk, Andong, where these critical discussions took place.
The 21st Century Human Values Forum
The “21st Century Human Values Forum” was held in Andong on the afternoon of the 6th. This annual event brings together experts from various fields such as philosophy and psychology to diagnose modern societal challenges and explore potential solutions. Now in its 12th year, the forum is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and Andong City, and organized by the Korea Spiritual Culture Foundation.
This year’s theme, “Balance and Harmony, Conditions for a Happy Life,” encourages participants to reflect on the significance of balance and harmony in an era marked by polarization and division. The forum aims to provide insights into how these principles can help heal societal rifts and foster a more cohesive global community.
Key Speakers and Discussions
One of the highlights of this year’s forum is a lecture by former World Bank President Kim Yong. He will deliver a keynote speech on the 7th under the theme “Finding the Path Through Human Values in an Era of Division.” Although Kim is a medical doctor, he has also shown a deep interest in the humanities. His academic background includes studies in medicine and anthropology at Harvard University in the U.S. Following his speech, Kim will engage in a dialogue with Jeon Heon, a former professor of Confucian and East Asian Studies at Sungkyunkwan University and Kim’s uncle, who previously served as head of the International Toegye Society.
On the 8th, additional lectures will be delivered by prominent figures in the field of humanities. These include Choi In-cheol, a humanities scholar and psychology professor at Seoul National University, and Lee Jin-woo, a distinguished professor in the humanities and social sciences at POSTECH. Their talks are expected to contribute valuable perspectives to the ongoing discussions about human values and their role in shaping a better future.
Recognizing Contributions to Human Values
In addition to the lectures, the “Human Values Award” will be presented to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting human values. This year’s recipients are Koo Soo-hwan, 67, director of the Lee Tae-seok Foundation and producer of the documentary film‘Don’t Cry Tonze’, and the Amorepacific Foundation.
Nam Sang-ho, secretary-general of the Korea Spiritual Culture Foundation, emphasized the importance of the forum in addressing global challenges. He stated, “Not only our country but the entire world is politically and economically racing toward extremes. Through this forum, I hope we can reaffirm the value of moderation and together contemplate the path to a better future.”
Conclusion
The 21st Century Human Values Forum serves as a crucial platform for discussing pressing global issues and exploring ways to foster a more balanced and harmonious society. By bringing together experts, scholars, and community members, the event promotes dialogue and collaboration on matters that affect all of humanity. As the climate crisis and other global challenges continue to evolve, such forums play an essential role in guiding collective efforts toward sustainable and equitable solutions.
