Autumn Beauty at Nagano’s Popular Pond Enchants Visitors

Autumn Foliage at Mishaka Pond Captivates Visitors

As the season of autumn takes hold, the vibrant colors of fall foliage are reaching their peak across Japan. In Chino, a city in Nagano Prefecture, the scenic beauty around Mishaka Pond is drawing visitors from all over. This picturesque spot, known for its stunning natural landscapes, is currently offering an unforgettable experience for those who visit.

The landscape surrounding Mishaka Pond is a breathtaking blend of nature’s finest elements. The deep blue sky contrasts beautifully with the golden larch trees and the red and orange hues of broad-leaved trees. These colors are reflected perfectly on the pond’s mirror-like surface, creating a mystical and serene environment that feels almost otherworldly.

Mishaka Pond holds a special place in Japanese art history as the inspiration for the painting “Midori Hibiku” (Vibrant Green) by the renowned artist Kaii Higashiyama. Located in the mountains at an altitude of about 1,500 meters, the pond lies on the western foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, which span Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures. The area is known for its changing scenery throughout the year, but it is during the autumn season that it truly comes to life. The entire mountain is transformed into a canvas of vibrant fall colors, attracting both tourists and photographers.

On November 4, under clear autumn skies, the pond was bustling with visitors. A steady stream of tourists arrived by sightseeing buses and private cars, eager to witness the beauty of the season. Fumihiko Oike, a 52-year-old office worker from Tokyo’s Koto Ward, shared his experience after visiting Mishaka Pond with his family over two days. He said, “This is my first time at Mishaka Pond, and it’s very beautiful,” as he took photos with his smartphone, capturing the moment.

According to the Chino Tourist Information Center, the autumn foliage this year emerged about two weeks later than usual, possibly due to the unusually warm weather earlier in the season. However, they noted that with the recent drop in temperature, the colors are expected to continue developing. They added that the foliage should remain enjoyable from this weekend through the beginning of next week, giving visitors ample time to experience the natural beauty of the area.
