Hanoi Groom’s Love Test: English Exam Before Wedding

A Unique Wedding Tradition in Hanoi

In a small commune in Hanoi, a 25-year-old man named Nhat Ninh found himself facing an unusual challenge before he could take his bride to their wedding. The tradition was not something commonly seen, but it was a creative and meaningful way for the couple to celebrate their love.

On the morning of October 16, Nhat Ninh arrived at the bride’s house in Tam Hung Commune to ask her parents for permission to marry. This part of the process followed traditional Vietnamese customs, which many would consider normal. However, what came next was anything but ordinary.

An IELTS Quiz as a Wedding Test

As he approached the door to the bride’s room, Nhat Ninh was met with a surprise. There were paper, pens, headphones, and an English quiz waiting for him. The bride, Quynh Huong, had set up the test as a condition for allowing him to escort her to the ceremony.

“I told him I had a challenge for him but kept it secret,” said Huong. “The quiz was short so that we would not hold up the ceremony or keep the guests waiting.”

The test consisted of five IELTS listening questions, which Nhat Ninh could only hear once. He was under the supervision of his future wife and six bridesmaids. He listened carefully, took notes, and finished the test in about three minutes. He answered four out of the five questions correctly, which allowed him to greet his in-laws and take his bride to the wedding ceremony.

A Creative and Memorable Challenge

Quynh Huong, an English teacher, came up with the idea four days before the wedding. She wanted to make the event more memorable and create a fun memory for both of them. She picked the questions from a Cambridge IELTS practice book and spent 15 minutes preparing the audio.

“I thought it would be a good way to show off his English ability and make the day special,” she said. The quiz was not meant to cause any hassles but rather to add a unique touch to their wedding day.

A video of the event quickly went viral on social media, with many people praising the idea for being creative and meaningful. It showed how the couple could combine their love for English and their cultural traditions into a memorable experience.

A Love Story Rooted in Education

Nhat Ninh and Quynh Huong are both from Tam Hung Commune. They met during an art performance in high school. Huong was drawn to Ninh’s calm and thoughtful personality, while he admired her cheerful and energetic nature.

There is a backstory to the test. During their school years, Huong tutored Ninh in English since he struggled with the subject. She taught him pronunciation, grammar, and communication skills, which helped him improve significantly over time.

This unique challenge not only showcased Ninh’s progress in learning English but also highlighted the bond they shared. Their story is a testament to how love can grow through support, patience, and shared goals.

A New Tradition?

While this specific tradition may not be widespread, it has sparked conversations about how couples can incorporate personal elements into their weddings. Whether it’s through language challenges, cultural rituals, or creative gestures, each couple has the opportunity to make their special day truly unique.

For Nhat Ninh and Quynh Huong, the IELTS quiz was more than just a test—it was a symbol of their journey together. It reflected their commitment to each other and their shared passion for learning and growth.

As their story continues to inspire others, it serves as a reminder that love can be expressed in countless ways, and sometimes, the most unexpected traditions can create the most unforgettable memories.
