Introduction to the STEM Exhibition in Tema
The Dext Technology Limited, as part of its Dext IVL Innovation initiative based in Thailand, recently organized a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exhibition and quiz. This event was held for 20 selected schools in Tema, highlighting the importance of practical learning and innovation among students.
Schools Participating in the Exhibition
The participating schools were evenly split between Tema Metro and Tema West, with 10 schools from each area. These institutions showcased various scientific and engineering projects aimed at addressing everyday challenges. The focus was on practical solutions that could improve daily life, particularly in areas such as sanitation and clean energy.
Projects Displayed at the Exhibition
Several innovative projects were presented during the event. These included:
- A hydraulic press
- A respiration system
- A solar eclipse model
- A smart irrigation system
- A plastic waste recycling setup
- A rainwater purification and collection system
These projects demonstrated the students’ ability to think critically and apply scientific principles to real-world problems.
Materials Used in the Projects
The students used a variety of materials to create their projects. These included water sachets, papers, bottle covers, plastic bottles, cardboard, solar panels, and basic science materials. The use of these items highlighted the potential for creativity and innovation even with limited resources.
Insights from the Project Associate
Ms. Dorcas Seyram Abotsi, the Project Associate of Dext Technology Limited, shared her insights during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). She mentioned that the company initially worked with five schools in Tema to train them on STEM concepts. Over time, this initiative expanded to include 20 schools.
Training and Resources Provided
Before the exhibition, facilitators from the selected schools received hands-on training on how to use the science sets and teach children to innovate. This training ensured that the students were equipped with the necessary skills to create solution-based projects.
Ms. Abotsi also noted that over 2000 science sets were donated to the 20 schools this year. These sets were intended to build the pupils’ basic knowledge in STEM fields.
Goals of the Project
The primary aim of the project was to empower students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ms. Abotsi emphasized the importance of providing students with the right resources to enable them to explore and innovate.
Challenging Perceptions
She challenged the common belief that Ghanaian students are only rote learners and incapable of practical work. According to Ms. Abotsi, students can achieve great things when given the necessary support and tools.
Call to Action
Ms. Abotsi urged the government and education stakeholders to collaborate with Dext Technology Limited. She called for the provision of prototype STEM sets in schools to help students develop essential science, engineering, and technological skills.
Conclusion
The STEM exhibition in Tema not only showcased the talents of the students but also highlighted the importance of investing in education and innovation. It serves as a reminder of the potential that exists within the younger generation when given the right opportunities and resources.
