Community Backs Expansion of David Umahi Federal University of Health Science
The people of Uburu, located in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have shown strong support for the expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Science (DUFUHS). This initiative aims to acquire more land to accommodate the growing needs of the institution. The community has officially endorsed this expansion, emphasizing that it is a collective decision made by the local leaders and traditional rulers.
In a communiqué signed by key figures from the host community, including HRH Lazarus Umahi, Chief Shedrack Onu, and Chief Odi Nicholas Enyi, the community expressed their full backing for the university’s growth. They highlighted that the expansion was not only a decision made by the community but also one that was formally approved by the Uburu traditional rulers council.
The leaders of the community also addressed concerns raised about the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who is the namesake of the university. They stated that there were allegations of land grabbing during the expansion process, but these claims were dismissed as unfounded. The community clarified that the petition against the minister was initiated by some individuals in the area, which they described as an attempt to undermine the progress of Uburu.
The leaders emphasized that using the name of Uburu in the petition was unacceptable and warned against any future misuse of the community’s name by those who do not have the best interests of the area at heart. They reiterated that the expansion of DUFUHS is a project that brings pride, jobs, and sustainable development to the region.
Transparent Process Ensures Community Involvement
A committee established to oversee the land acquisition for the university provided a detailed explanation of the process. The committee, led by Coordinator Dr. Umezurike Daniel and Secretary Mr. Odi Nicholas Enyi, outlined the steps taken to ensure transparency and inclusivity.
According to the committee, the university’s governing council had requested additional land for expansion because the current campus occupies less than 20 hectares. To facilitate this, the committee developed a set of terms of reference that included:
- Conducting community-wide awareness campaigns to inform residents about the expansion.
- Identifying and engaging affected landowners to discuss the implications of the project.
- Obtaining consent and signatures from all affected families.
- Facilitating compensation for every verified landowner.
All these steps were followed meticulously, ensuring that the process was fair and respectful to the community. The committee worked with 29 identified landowners, each of whom received compensation and provided written consent for the use of their land. There was no evidence of land grabbing, intimidation, or threats to life during the process.
Condemnation of Unwarranted Allegations
The community strongly condemned the actions of a few individuals who attempted to exploit the name of Umuchima village to create division and tarnish the reputation of David Umahi. These individuals, according to the community leaders, do not have the best interests of Uburu in mind.
All community groups have affirmed their total support for the DUFUHS expansion, recognizing it as a vital project that has brought significant benefits to the area. The expansion is seen as a step forward that will continue to drive progress and development in Uburu.
Conclusion
The expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Science represents a significant milestone for the Uburu community. With the support of local leaders and the endorsement of the traditional council, the project is viewed as a positive development that will bring long-term benefits. The transparent and inclusive approach taken by the land expansion committee has ensured that the process is fair and respects the rights of all stakeholders involved. As the university continues to grow, it is expected to play a crucial role in the education and economic development of the region.
