Rejection of U.S. President’s Claims About Nigeria
The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has strongly denied the recent statement made by the President of the United States regarding a “genocidal situation” in Nigeria. The group described the claim as misleading, divisive, and harmful to the country’s unity. In a communique issued after an emergency consultative session held in Ibadan, the League reaffirmed its dedication to Nigeria’s peace, sovereignty, and religious harmony.
The communique, delivered by Sheikh AbdulRasaq AbdulAzeez Ishola, the Grand Mufti of Yorubaland and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the upcoming Lagos Conference, stated that “Nigeria is not experiencing any genocide.” The League rejected what it called “the claim of any form of genocidal act or targeted religious persecution in Nigeria.”
It emphasized that Nigeria remains a sovereign, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic nation with a shared history of peaceful coexistence. While acknowledging isolated incidents of insecurity and communal misunderstanding, the group warned against misrepresenting these as acts of genocide. “Such generalizations are misleading, divisive, and detrimental to the unity and peace we have been striving to maintain,” the communique read.
Reaffirming Islam’s message of peace and tolerance, the League cited the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Madinah as a model for harmonious living among diverse faiths. “In that same spirit, Muslims in Nigeria, especially in Yorubaland, have lived, worked and interacted peacefully with Christians and adherents of other faiths for centuries,” it noted.
The League declared its continued commitment to the legacy of moderation and centrism that has long guided Islamic scholarship and practice in the region. Addressing international concerns, the League urged global leaders, particularly the United States, to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and avoid hasty generalizations or external interference.
“Nigeria’s domestic challenges, like those faced by many nations, should be addressed through national dialogue, cooperation, and homegrown solutions, not through foreign impositions or biased narratives,” the communique added.
The Imams and Alfas also called on international media, observers, and foreign governments to engage in responsible reporting that promotes peace rather than fuels misunderstanding. “Nigeria’s image and unity are too valuable to be tainted by misinformation or politically motivated assertions,” they cautioned.
The League urged Nigerians of all faiths, Muslims, Christians, and traditionalists, to remain steadfast in peace, mutual respect, and national unity. “Let us continue to demonstrate that our diversity is our strength and that faith and ethnicity should never be used as tools of division,” the communique stated.
Reiterating its position, the League declared: “Nigeria is not experiencing any genocide. We stand united as one people, under one God, and within one nation, committed to justice, peace, and coexistence as taught by Islam and embraced by our cultural heritage.”
The League further called on the international community to engage Nigeria “in truth, fairness, and mutual respect, not in propaganda or political misrepresentation.”
The Imams and Alfas prayed for Nigeria’s leaders and people, asking Almighty Allah to guide, protect, and bless the nation with enduring peace and progress.
The session was attended by senior Islamic scholars, including Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere (President), Sheikh Saadallah Bamgbola (Vice President), Sheikh AbdulGaniy Abubakri Agbotomokekere (Grand Patron), Sheikh Muhammad Rabiu (Chief Imam of Osun State), Sheikh AbdulHakeem Yayi (Chief Imam of Ondo State), Sheikh Seifudeen Olowooribi (Chairman, Lagos State Rabita), and Sheikh Habeebullah Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory (Chairman, Board of Trustees).
The communique was signed by Sheikh Mustapha Olawale Hossein Doak, General Secretary of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland.
