A Symbolic Tribute to a Democratic Icon
Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka made a striking impression on Thursday when he arrived in Bondo dressed in a symbolic jungle green outfit. This choice of attire, reminiscent of the style he often wore during street demonstrations in recent years, was more than just a fashion statement—it carried a deep political message.
“I am dressed this way to honour the father of maandamano,” Kalonzo declared. “We resisted, and Kenyans are still resisting bad governance.”
His words resonated with the significance of the occasion as he led a delegation to pay tribute to the late Raila Amollo Odinga. The Wiper leader described Raila as “the father of maandamano,” crediting him for championing Kenya’s democratic freedoms through peaceful protests and civic action. Kalonzo’s choice of attire was a deliberate gesture meant to evoke the spirit of political struggle that defined Raila’s legacy.
As leaders and supporters gathered to mourn the opposition icon, Kalonzo’s attire stood out as a visual reminder of the long, often painful fight for democracy, one that both he and Raila had walked side by side.
A Journey of Respect and Remembrance
Before heading to Bondo, Kalonzo addressed the media in Kisumu. He spoke about the late Raila Odinga, describing him as a true patriot who dedicated his life to shaping Kenya into a “good, reputable, and democratically oriented nation.”
“Today, I have come to mourn my late brother, Raila Amollo Odinga, with whom we went to the trenches to give this country a respectable, democratic nation, the type of nation that young Kenyans have been looking forward to,” Kalonzo said.
The delegation, which left Kisumu early Thursday morning, is visiting Opoda Farm in Bondo before proceeding to Kango Kajaramogi, where the late opposition leader was laid to rest. Kalonzo was accompanied by several leaders and professionals from the Ukambani region. He announced plans to make a short stop to pay courtesy to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o before traveling to Bondo.
“We will make a short stop to call on Governor Nyong’o before heading to Bondo. I ask everyone to drive peacefully. Let us pray for a safe journey,” he added, inviting a bishop to pray for the delegation. Among those in his entourage were clan elders, professionals, and bishops. Also present were former and current Members of Parliament.
Unity in Grief and Support
Kalonzo lauded residents of Kisumu and Siaya for their warm reception and solidarity with Mama Ida Odinga and the Odinga family.
“We are united in mourning our brother. I spoke to Governor James Orengo, and I can see the people of Kisumu and Siaya have truly welcomed us. Everyone is here to support Mama Ida and the family,” he said.
This journey was not just about paying respects but also about reinforcing the bonds of unity and shared purpose among Kenyan citizens. The presence of various leaders, religious figures, and community members highlighted the deep impact Raila had on the nation.
A Legacy of Resistance and Democracy
Raila Amollo Odinga’s legacy is one of resilience and dedication to the principles of democracy. His efforts to challenge authoritarian rule and advocate for the rights of Kenyan citizens inspired generations. Kalonzo’s actions on this day were a tribute to that legacy, reminding all that the fight for a fair and just society continues.
As the delegation moved forward in their journey, the message was clear: the spirit of resistance and the pursuit of democratic values remain alive. The jungle green outfit, once a symbol of protest, now serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for a better Kenya.
