The Growing Concern of Illegal Migration in Nigeria
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has raised significant concerns about the increasing number of Nigerians losing their lives in Europe and America due to illegal migration and migrant smuggling. This alarming trend is driven by the pursuit of better opportunities abroad, often at great personal risk.
During a nationwide Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Sensitisation Campaign held at the NIS Headquarters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the NIS Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, urged residents of Ogun State to avoid illegal migration. She emphasized that this practice leads to sorrow, anguish, and even death. Nandap encouraged the residents to collaborate with the Federal Government to increase awareness about the dangers of this growing threat.
Understanding the Risks of Illegal Migration
Illegal migration from Nigeria is primarily fueled by economic hardship, lack of opportunities, and the perception of better prospects abroad. Young Nigerians are particularly vulnerable, often viewing irregular migration as a survival strategy despite the extreme risks involved. These risks include human trafficking, violence, and perilous journeys through land, sea, and air routes to destinations across Africa, Europe, and North America.
The theme of the campaign, “Say No to Migrant Smuggling,” highlighted the dangers faced by many Nigerians who are subjected to hard labor abroad. Women, in particular, suffer from rape and other forms of sexual abuse. Nandap clarified that the Federal Government does not discourage Nigerians from traveling abroad for legitimate reasons such as permanent residence, studies, or other valid purposes. However, she stressed the importance of using proper and legal channels for travel.
Steps to Ensure Safe and Legal Travel
Nandap explained that some individuals opt for illegal routes because they do not want to spend money or follow due process. This attitude often results in disastrous consequences. She outlined the necessary steps before traveling abroad: obtaining a valid passport from the Nigeria Immigration Service, securing a visa, and ensuring a clear understanding of the destination. Most importantly, she advised avoiding fake travel agents who may mislead or exploit travelers.
Combating Illegal Migration Through Collaboration
Earlier in her speech, the Ogun State Comptroller of Immigration, CIS Olufunke Odusote, represented by the Deputy Comptroller, Kayode Adedigba, stated that the Command has intensified efforts to combat illegal migration and the smuggling of migrants. Odusote identified social media as a major factor fueling the menace, explaining that many unsuspecting Nigerians fall victim to fraudulent travel agents and fake job offers online despite continuous public enlightenment.
She revealed that the Ogun State Command is working with other security agencies, including the Police and the Amotekun Corps, to curb the trend. Odusote emphasized that while migration is not discouraged, it must be done legally. Many Nigerians abroad face forced labor, prostitution, rape, and even death. She urged people to remain in Nigeria, where they can enjoy freedom and dignity.
The Importance of Awareness and Education
The sensitisation campaign included outreach activities across communities to educate residents on the dangers of illegal migration and the importance of safe and lawful travel. The desire to emigrate is particularly strong among young, educated, and middle-class Nigerians, with destinations like the EU, UK, and Canada becoming increasingly popular, often for education or work.
While the government acknowledges that citizens have the right to seek better opportunities outside the country, it calls for such decisions to be made through legally approved routes. Choosing to migrate illegally exposes individuals to various dangers, including death. The Federal Government is working tirelessly to address this crisis and achieve positive results.
