Peace Corps of Nigeria Calls for UN Intervention Amid US Threats
The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has called on the United Nations to intervene in the escalating tensions between the United States and Nigeria, following a threat by former U.S. President Donald Trump to deploy military forces against Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians in the country.
Dr. Dickson Akoh, the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, expressed deep concern over Trump’s remarks during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday. He emphasized that the threat of military action would not only be counterproductive but could also put vulnerable Nigerians at risk of avoidable dangers and hardships.
Concern Over Military Threats
During his address, Dr. Akoh highlighted that while the Peace Corps acknowledges the serious issue of insecurity affecting citizens of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds, including foreign nationals, it strongly urged Trump to pursue a diplomatic and peaceful approach rather than resorting to military force.
He stated that military intervention, especially unilateral action, carries significant risks. It could complicate an already complex environment, escalate violence, and potentially destabilize the very communities it aims to protect. This could lead to a humanitarian crisis far worse than the original problem.
“Military intervention, especially unilateral action, carries an inherent and enormous risk. It complicates an already complex environment, threatens to escalate violence, and risks destabilizing the very communities it seeks to protect, potentially creating a humanitarian crisis far worse than the original problem. We must avoid this tragic playbook,” he said.
Advocating for Non-Kinetic Solutions
Dr. Akoh stressed that Nigeria requires collaborative and strategic support, not confrontation. He emphasized the importance of a non-kinetic approach, which includes peaceful and developmental means.
“We stand ready to partner with international bodies and the U.S. government through peaceful and developmental means. The deployment of resources for job creation, education, and peace-building programs represents a far more sustainable and effective path to peace than the deployment of troops,” he added.
He further urged the United States to respect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and engage through established diplomatic channels.
Role of the United Nations
As a member of the UN system with Special Consultative Status granted in 2013, the Peace Corps of Nigeria shares the organization’s core ideals: a commitment to global peace and security. Dr. Akoh called on the United Nations to act urgently to mediate the rising tensions between the U.S. and Nigeria.
“Since any regional threat risks global stability, we call on the United Nations to urgently leverage consultative dialogue, integrated negotiation, and high-level diplomacy to mediate the rising tensions between its member states, America and Nigeria,” he said.
Commitment to Peace and Sovereignty
Nigeria, according to Dr. Akoh, is a proud and sovereign nation committed to fundamental freedoms. He urged the international community to prioritize peace and diplomacy over the trauma of military deployment.
“Therefore, the UN must act decisively to intervene before this current tension spirals into any form of confrontation. By urgently bringing both nations together under its neutral auspices, the United Nations can secure a path of mutual respect and sustainable, non-kinetic solutions that truly benefit the vulnerable people of Nigeria,” he concluded.
