Soldiers Charged with Attacking Civilians in Basyonde

Escalation of Tensions in Basyonde

Residents of Basyonde, located in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region, have raised serious concerns about alleged acts of violence by soldiers from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, November 3, 2025, following the killing of an immigration officer by unknown gunmen. According to local reports, the soldiers were allegedly involved in a retaliatory attack against civilians.

The alleged assault was said to be in response to the fatal attack on an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Nagani, a nearby border community, last Saturday night. This event has triggered widespread fear and unrest among the residents of Basyonde.

A Harrowing Experience

Speaking to a local media outlet, Mr. Haruna Musah Asaana, the Assemblyman for Basyonde, described the incident as “harrowing.” He explained that the soldiers had been assigned to conduct a search at Nagani but instead stormed Basyonde on a market day. According to him, the uniformed men allegedly assaulted men, women, and children indiscriminately, causing panic among the residents.

As a result, hundreds of people fled their homes in fear. Several victims, including minors, were treated at the Basyonde Health Centre. Mr. Asaana mentioned that he contacted the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tempane, Mr. Joseph Mbilla, who later intervened to help calm the tensions in the area.

Lack of Official Response

Despite the allegations, Lieutenant Colonel Kara Sasu-Antwi, Commander Rear of the Eleventh Mechanised Battalion at Bazua, has not yet responded to the claims. Additionally, the Upper East Regional Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Security Sources Confirm the Attack

Security sources confirmed that Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Mohammed Rafiq was killed in the ambush on Saturday night, while his colleague managed to escape with injuries. The attack has heightened fears in the area, with some immigration officers reportedly considering staying away from duty.

Impact on the Community

The incident has left the community in a state of anxiety and uncertainty. The fear of further violence has led to a sense of insecurity among the residents. Many are questioning the actions of the security forces and demanding accountability for the alleged assault.

The situation remains tense, with calls for a thorough investigation into the events that transpired. Local leaders and community members are urging the authorities to take swift action to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents.

Ongoing Concerns

As the situation unfolds, there is a growing concern about the potential for further conflict in the region. The involvement of the military in civilian areas raises questions about the balance between security operations and the protection of human rights.

Residents are hoping for clarity and resolution, as they seek to rebuild their lives in a safe environment. The need for dialogue between the authorities and the community is more pressing than ever.
