The Importance of Genetic Diversity in Shaping Namibia’s Agricultural Future
The sixth edition of the Bank Windhoek Agri Series brought together key stakeholders from government, finance, and the agricultural sector to discuss critical issues affecting the future of farming in Namibia. Hosted at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management (NIPAM) in Windhoek, the event highlighted the crucial role of genetic diversity in ensuring the resilience and productivity of the nation’s agriculture.
Genetic diversity is essential for building a sustainable and competitive agri-food system. It enables crops and livestock to adapt to changing environmental conditions, resist pests and diseases, and meet the growing demands of consumers. This was a central theme during the event, where experts emphasized the need for strategic investments in seed improvement, mechanization, and climate-smart practices.
Key Messages from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform
Kingsley Kwenani, Deputy Executive Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Minister Dr Inge Zaamwani. He stressed that genetic diversity is not just an option but a necessity for agricultural transformation.
“Genetic diversity is the foundation of our ability to innovate, adapt, and compete,” said Kwenani. “It supports drought tolerance, pest resistance, nutritional enhancement, and improved yields—traits that are vital for a resilient and inclusive agri-food system.”
He also outlined how genetic diversity aligns with the goals of Namibia’s Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6). Strategic initiatives such as the Namibia Agricultural Mechanisation and Seed Improvement Project (NAMSIP), Conservation Agriculture and ClimateSmart Initiatives (CCAP II), and the Livestock Support Programme are being implemented to strengthen the sector.
Kwenani introduced the newly developed Strategy for the Transformation of the Agri-Food Sector in Namibia (STAS), which outlines priority areas for investment and stakeholder roles. He called for unity, innovation, and resolve to shape the future of agriculture in the country.
Role of Financial Institutions in Supporting Agricultural Growth
Bank Windhoek Managing Director James Chapman welcomed attendees and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting agricultural advancement. He highlighted the importance of tailored financial solutions, sustainability loans, and strategic partnerships in empowering farmers.
“As a proudly Namibian financial institution, Bank Windhoek recognises the strategic importance of agriculture as a cornerstone of our economy and food security,” said Chapman. “Our partnership with John Deere and support for sustainable agriculture projects exemplify our dedication to promoting environmental stewardship.”
Expert Insights and Collaborative Efforts
The event featured expert presentations from various industry leaders, including Jacque Els of the Namibia Stud Breeders Association, Thinus Pretorius of the Namibia Agricultural Union, Erastus Ngaruka of Agribank, and Goi Geurtse of SWAVET. Their contributions focused on genetic diversity, sustainable farming practices, rangeland management, and animal health.
These discussions underscored the importance of innovation, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration in driving the agricultural sector forward. Experts also addressed pressing challenges and proposed solutions, emphasizing the need for collective action among Namibians.
The Bank Windhoek Agri Series: A Platform for Dialogue and Progress
Established in 2019, the Bank Windhoek Agri Series has become a vital platform for dialogue, empowerment, and progress in Namibia’s agricultural community. The event fosters inclusion and resilience through knowledge exchange and collaboration.
This year’s focus on genetic diversity is seen as pivotal for improving quality, resilience, and yield, securing the future of agriculture in the country. The full event recording will be available on the Bank Windhoek YouTube platform.
