The sixth edition of the Bank Windhoek Agri Series brought together key stakeholders from government, finance, and the agricultural sector to discuss critical issues affecting the future of farming in Namibia. Hosted at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management (NIPAM) in Windhoek, the event highlighted the crucial role of genetic diversity in ensuring the resilience and productivity of the nation’s agriculture.
Genetic diversity is essential for building a sustainable and competitive agri-food system. It enables crops and livestock to adapt to changing environmental conditions, resist pests and diseases, and meet the growing demands of consumers. This was a central theme during the event, where experts emphasized the need for strategic investments in seed improvement, mechanization, and climate-smart practices.
Key Messages from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform
Kingsley Kwenani, Deputy Executive Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Minister Dr Inge Zaamwani. He stressed that genetic diversity is not just an option but a necessity for agricultural transformation.
“Genetic diversity is the foundation of our ability to innovate, adapt, and compete,” said Kwenani. “It supports drought tolerance, pest resistance, nutritional enhancement, and improved yields—traits that are vital for a resilient and inclusive agri-food system.”
He also outlined how genetic diversity aligns with the goals of Namibia’s Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6). Strategic initiatives such as the Namibia Agricultural Mechanisation and Seed Improvement Project (NAMSIP), Conservation Agriculture and ClimateSmart Initiatives (CCAP II), and the Livestock Support Programme are being implemented to strengthen the sector.
Kwenani introduced the newly developed Strategy for the Transformation of the Agri-Food Sector in Namibia (STAS), which outlines priority areas for investment and stakeholder roles. He called for unity, innovation, and resolve to shape the future of agriculture in the country.
