EU Praises Namibia’s Climate Leadership Ahead of COP30
As the world gears up for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Namibia has highlighted the country’s significant contributions to global climate action. The conference is set to take place from 10 to 21 November and will serve as a critical platform for nations to accelerate efforts toward meeting the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.
The EU Delegation specifically acknowledged the participation of H.E. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the summit, emphasizing her role in advancing climate initiatives. In a statement, the delegation praised Namibia for its long-standing commitment to combating climate change, promoting environmental protection, and pursuing green industrialization—principles that align closely with those of the EU.
A Global Transition Toward Sustainability
COP30 represents a pivotal moment for the international community to step up climate action and ensure progress toward the targets set a decade ago. The EU remains steadfast in its dedication to driving a clean, fair, and resilient global transition. All participating countries are expected to submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) before the conference begins.
The EU has presented a unified and ambitious new NDC, agreed upon by all 27 member states. This plan aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by between 66.25% and 72.5% below 1990 levels by 2035. This target sets the stage for a 90% reduction by 2040 and full climate neutrality across the EU by 2050. These goals are supported by strong European climate legislation and concrete actions, such as the 8% decrease in EU emissions in 2023 alongside economic growth, demonstrating that decarbonization and economic development can coexist.
At COP30, the EU will advocate for stronger collaboration among nations to close the gap between climate pledges and actual implementation. It will push for tripling global renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency rates by 2030, while also working to limit temperature increases to within the 1.5°C threshold.
Climate Finance and Global Cooperation
Climate finance remains one of the most pressing challenges in the fight against climate change. The “Baku to Belém Roadmap” seeks to increase financial support for developing countries to at least USD 1.3 trillion annually by 2035. The EU and its member states continue to be the largest contributors of public climate finance globally. In 2024 alone, the EU provided NAD 633.9 billion (€31.7 billion), with an additional NAD 220 billion (€11 billion) mobilized through private investment.
Strong partnerships are essential for achieving a just and equitable transition. Namibia’s leadership in areas such as green hydrogen, critical raw materials, and sustainable land management showcases how climate action can create jobs, foster industrial growth, and provide opportunities for youth.
EU’s Commitment to Green Industrialization
EU Ambassador to Namibia, Ana Beatriz Martins, emphasized that Namibia’s leadership in developing green economy sectors highlights Africa’s crucial role in shaping a sustainable global future. She stated that the EU is ready to deepen cooperation with Namibia on green industrialization, resilience, and inclusive growth.
European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will represent the EU at COP30, focusing on discussions about industry decarbonization, energy transition, and climate resilience. Through partnerships like the one with Namibia, the EU continues to lead the global shift away from fossil fuels and keep the 1.5°C goal within reach.
