AI-Powered Cybercrime: Stay Alert – MTN CEO

The Growing Threat of AI-Powered Cybercrime

In recent years, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybercrime has become a major concern for individuals and organizations alike. Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, highlighted this issue during a cybersecurity chat event, emphasizing that cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI technologies to conduct more sophisticated attacks. This shift necessitates heightened vigilance from all users of digital platforms.

During his speech, Mr. Blewett explained that AI-powered phishing attacks have become more convincing and targeted, making it difficult for users to differentiate between legitimate and malicious communications. He noted that these AI-driven social engineering tactics can trick victims into revealing sensitive information or performing actions that compromise their security.

“AI is a positive development, but like any technology, it can be used for both positive and negative purposes. We see how cybercriminals are using AI, and that’s why companies and organizations need to stay vigilant,” he said.

Mr. Blewett further stressed the importance of keeping up with new technologies, warning that those who fail to do so may expose themselves and their organizations to significant risks. “If you don’t keep pace with new technologies, you’re exposed to risks. That’s the danger of not being cyber-aware,” he added.

To combat these threats, Mr. Blewett encouraged internet users to stay informed about the latest cyber threats and to adopt AI-driven security solutions. These tools can help detect and respond to potential threats more effectively. He also warned against procrastination when it comes to understanding emerging technologies.

“The challenge we all face is that technology is changing quickly, and it’s easy to put off learning about it. You might think, ‘I’ll get to understand that tomorrow,’ but that’s exactly what cybercriminals are counting on. My warning is don’t wait until tomorrow. Understand what’s happening today, because if you don’t, you’re exposing yourself – and your company – to risks,” he said.

Collaboration and Awareness in Cybersecurity

Gerald Awadzie, Senior Manager at the Cybersecurity Authority, echoed the importance of collaboration and awareness in the fight against cyber threats. He emphasized that the authority is working on building a resilient foundation and developing national capacity to address cybersecurity challenges in the African region.

“The authority is working with various organizations to raise awareness about cybersecurity and the importance of complying with security measures,” Mr. Awadzie mentioned. He also highlighted the need for industry stakeholders to come together to foster a culture of service and security.

Mr. Awadzie urged individuals to take cybersecurity seriously, noting that many people do not fully understand the necessity of security measures. However, he stressed that these measures are crucial for protecting personal and organizational data.

Key Takeaways for Internet Users

  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest cyber threats and AI-powered attacks.
  • Leverage Technology: Use AI-driven security solutions to detect and respond to threats.
  • Avoid Procrastination: Don’t delay learning about new technologies; cybercriminals are always one step ahead.
