Akada Book Festival Inspires a Reading Generation with Pride — Talabi

The Akada Children’s Book Festival: Nurturing a Generation of Readers and Storytellers

Olubunmi Aboderin Talabi, a celebrated author and the convener of the Akada Children’s Book Festival (ACBF), has emphasized the festival’s mission to cultivate a generation that reads, creates, and proudly tells African stories. This vision was brought to life during the seventh edition of the ACBF, held at the UPBEAT Recreation Centre in Lekki, Lagos, where over 1,500 attendees gathered to celebrate the power of literature.

The festival, which is the first and largest Nigerian book festival specifically designed for children, marked its most significant edition yet. It featured a wide array of activities aimed at inspiring young readers and fostering creativity. Over 34 authors and speakers participated, along with 27 featured books. The event included 14 workshops, 11 storytime sessions, eight book readings, five book chats, and numerous other engaging activities.

A Celebration of Stories and Adventures

Talabi highlighted the theme of this year’s festival, “Book an Adventure,” which served as a reminder that every story opens a new door of discovery. She said, “Books give children the courage to imagine, to dream, and to explore worlds beyond their own.” The festival aimed to instill in every child a sense of wonder and possibility, encouraging them to view reading not as a task but as an adventure waiting to unfold.

The theme also underscored the importance of storytelling in helping children explore new worlds, ask bold questions, and see themselves as active participants in shaping the future. Through various activities, the festival provided a platform for children to engage with literature in a meaningful way.

Diverse Activities for All Ages

Throughout the day, the festival offered a diverse program of activities tailored for children, as well as their parents and teachers. Special animation and illustration workshops introduced children to the exciting world of visual storytelling, allowing them to express their creativity through art. These interactive sessions were designed to spark imagination and encourage young minds to think critically and creatively.

In addition to these creative activities, the festival also recognized excellence in children’s literature by presenting three major awards. Komtu, the Grumpy Chameleon won the Picture Book of the Year award, while The Water School by Ogbu Eme was named the Early Reader Book of the Year.

Recognizing Excellence in Children’s Literature

Award winner Tayo Oyetayo shared her thoughts on the recognition, stating, “My goal is to carefully craft a world in my children’s books where every child sees themselves reflected in the pages. The Akada Children’s Books Festival creates a platform that recognizes and elevates these stories.”

This sentiment resonated throughout the festival, as it highlighted the importance of representation in children’s literature. By showcasing diverse voices and perspectives, the ACBF continues to play a vital role in shaping the literary landscape for future generations.

A Platform for Growth and Inspiration

The Akada Children’s Book Festival has become more than just an event—it is a movement that encourages children to embrace the joy of reading and storytelling. With its focus on creativity, education, and cultural appreciation, the festival has created a space where young readers can explore, learn, and grow.

As the festival continues to evolve, it remains committed to its mission of fostering a love for books and stories among children. Through its innovative programming and dedication to excellence, the ACBF is making a lasting impact on the lives of young readers across Nigeria and beyond.
