CM Maryam Champions AI-Powered Air Quality Initiative for a Smog-Free Punjab

Punjab’s Initiative for a Smog-Free Future

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a significant initiative aimed at achieving a Smog-Free Punjab, with her government working under the slogan “One Government, One Vision, One Mission: Clean Air.” This effort reflects a unified approach to tackle air pollution and improve environmental conditions across the province.

According to the Environment Department, polluted easterly winds from the Indian border have impacted Lahore’s air quality. However, there are early signs of improvement, with the city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 280 on Saturday, which is lower than previous hazardous levels. Officials noted that cold mornings, low wind speeds (1-4 km/h), and a lack of rainfall have contributed to the accumulation of pollutants. Yet, an increase in wind speed between 1 pm and 5 pm is expected to help disperse the smog.

All relevant departments of the Punjab government are operating in three shifts under the direct supervision of CM Maryam Nawaz. These efforts include traffic control, water sprinkling, and industrial inspections. Modern monitoring stations across Lahore are continuously tracking PM2.5 and PM10 levels in real time. Citizens have been advised to wear masks, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay indoors, especially children and the elderly.

The Environment Department assured the public that the situation remains under control, emphasizing that there is no cause for alarm. Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s “Clean and Green Punjab” vision, a comprehensive, multi-sectoral pollution control strategy is being implemented for the first time in the province’s history.

Addressing Pollution through Innovation

Traditional crop residue burning is being replaced with modern mechanization to curb emissions. Over 5,000 Super Seeders, 814 Kubota machines, harvesters, and 91 balers have been distributed to farmers, converting more than 600,000 bales of residue so far. To ensure and monitor compliance, ‘Hawk Eyes’ thermal drones are being deployed for the first time to identify violations in real time.

To reduce dust and soil pollution, water sprinkling has begun in key urban areas, while construction sites are being covered to prevent the spread of dust. Under the new vehicle testing regime, more than 300,000 fitness certificates have been issued, ensuring that vehicles on the road meet emission standards.

Industrial emissions are also being closely monitored. Around 8,500 industrial units across Punjab are now under an AI-based centralized monitoring system, enabling real-time tracking of emissions. Meanwhile, brick kilns are being transitioned to zigzag technology to minimize smoke output.

In another first for Pakistan, an Emission Testing System for vehicles has been launched to accurately gauge pollutants. To combat smog and dust, 371 mist sprinkler systems have been installed across Punjab, while more than 8,596 sites are being monitored through AI and drone surveillance to ensure compliance with anti-smog regulations.

Technological Advancements for Environmental Protection

Under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “Clean and Green Punjab” vision, the province has also developed its own AI-based Air Quality Forecasting System. A digital forecasting platform has been introduced for the first time to predict and manage pollution trends, enabling proactive policy decisions.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb hailed these measures as a revolutionary step toward environmental protection. “The vision of a Smog-Free Punjab under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is becoming a reality,” she said, adding that “Clean and Green Punjab is a movement for a healthier lifestyle and a practical step toward providing future generations with a clean environment.”

As the province grapples with seasonal smog, the Punjab government’s Anti-Smog Action Plan-led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz-is being implemented at an accelerated pace, marking a historic commitment to clean, healthy, and safe air for all citizens.
