A New Approach to Security in Nigeria
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has highlighted the importance of a collaborative strategy in tackling security challenges across Nigeria. During a press conference held at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, Egbetokun emphasized that the nation’s security agencies are now adopting an “all-of-society” approach to combat banditry and other threats.
This new strategy was announced during the foundation-laying ceremony for a new multi-purpose police conference centre. The IGP stated that achieving effective security requires more than just the efforts of law enforcement; it also demands active participation from local communities.
“We are now engaging all communities through what we call the ‘all-community approach’ to address insecurity,” Egbetokun said. He further stressed that cooperation between security institutions and communities is essential to overcoming the country’s challenges.
Collaboration Is Key
Egbetokun pointed out that security cannot be achieved in isolation. He called for synergy among all security agencies and communities across Nigeria. “To secure this nation, we must work together, trust one another, and reject fake news,” he added.
He also warned against the spread of misinformation about security institutions, noting that such acts can undermine the morale of personnel who risk their lives to keep citizens safe. “When people spread falsehoods about those providing security, they undermine national resolve. We must stay truthful and support the agencies that protect us,” he said.
Preparing for a Peaceful Festive Season
In addition to addressing current security concerns, Egbetokun assured Nigerians that the police were well-prepared to ensure a peaceful and incident-free festive season. “Preparations for the yuletide began months ago. All our commands have been directed to implement robust security measures to guarantee a safe and joyous celebration for everyone,” he said.
The IGP praised Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, for initiating the construction of the new conference centre. He described it as a milestone in the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing reforms. “Today’s foundation-laying is symbolic — we are not only building a structure but also reinforcing a vision of professionalism, discipline and excellence within the Force,” he stated.
Lagos as a Model for Policing
Lagos, according to Egbetokun, holds a unique position in the operational framework of the police force. As a megacity, it reflects the complexity of Nigeria’s wider security landscape. “Policing in Lagos has long served as a model for the rest of the country,” he said.
Egbetokun urged other police commissioners nationwide to emulate the Lagos initiative. He stressed that infrastructure development and innovation are key to creating a more efficient, people-centred police service.
Building a Stronger Future
The new conference centre represents more than just a physical structure; it symbolizes a commitment to professional growth and community engagement. With its completion, the police force aims to enhance its capacity to serve the public effectively.
By fostering collaboration between security agencies and communities, Nigeria can move closer to achieving lasting peace and stability. The IGP’s vision underscores the importance of unity, transparency, and shared responsibility in safeguarding the nation.
