FHA Launches Housing Initiative in Akwa Ibom

Launch of Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Akwa Ibom State

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has officially commenced the construction of its Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. This significant event marked a pivotal step in addressing the housing challenges faced by many Nigerians.

The groundbreaking ceremony was led by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, and attended by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the FHA, Oyetunde Ojo. The event highlighted the collaboration between the state government and the federal authority to deliver affordable housing solutions.

In a statement released on Friday, the FHA’s Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Chigelu, emphasized that Ojo praised Eno for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people, especially in the realm of housing provision. Ojo recalled the governor’s early support for the project, noting that he provided the authority with land free of charge and pledged continued assistance to ensure its success.

Ojo shared a personal memory of the initial meeting with the governor on May 2nd, 2024, when he and his management team sought the governor’s endorsement and partnership for the Renewed Hope Housing agenda. He described the reception and encouragement received from the governor as unmatched.

The decision to launch the Renewed Hope Housing Programme in Akwa Ibom was a deliberate gesture to reciprocate the governor’s goodwill and partnership. Ojo stated that the initiative is part of fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to renew the hope of Nigerians by providing livable and affordable houses. He emphasized that decent shelter is crucial for productivity and quality of life.

According to Ojo, the FHA has concluded procurement processes for housing construction across the six geopolitical zones, with groundbreaking ceremonies planned for Kaduna, Abia, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi, and Adamawa states. He also disclosed that the authority has been completing and commissioning inherited projects in line with President Tinubu’s directive that “the days of abandoned projects are over.”

Ojo described the Akwa Ibom project as “more than another housing estate,” calling it “a livable and affordable environment that embodies the signature of the Federal Housing Authority.” He commended Eno for providing the Authority with a platform to establish its presence in Akwa Ibom for the first time in its over 50-year history, adding that the project’s value chain would create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the state.

Governor’s Remarks and Commitment

In his remarks, Eno thanked Tinubu for approving the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme and to the FHA for choosing Akwa Ibom as the launch site. He noted that such federal projects align with his administration’s commitment to collaborate with the Federal Government in tackling the housing deficit and accelerating development.

The governor revealed that, apart from the FHA project, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had also been allocated 50 hectares of land for its own housing initiative. He mentioned that the state is focused on housing for civil servants, citing projects like the Aviation City, Judicial City, Legislative, and Executive estates—each built to accommodate the needs of the people.

Eno assured all that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of Akwa Ibom residents and urged the FHA to ensure the project’s speedy completion. He also pledged to extend the state’s robust security architecture to protect the housing site, stressing that “the government does not compromise or play politics with the welfare of the people.”

Overview of the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme

The Renewed Hope Housing Scheme is a flagship initiative of Tinubu’s administration, designed to address Nigeria’s housing deficit and promote inclusive home ownership. Implemented through the Federal Housing Authority and the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the programme aims to provide affordable, quality, and sustainable homes for low- and middle-income earners across the six geopolitical zones.

Under the Renewed Hope agenda, the Federal Government is partnering with state governments to provide land and supporting infrastructure, while the FHA oversees construction and delivery. This collaborative approach is expected to boost employment, strengthen local building industries, and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable cities and communities.
