South-South Zone of FTAN to Launch New Executive Council in November 2025

The South-South Zone of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) is preparing to unveil its new Executive Council on November 17, 2025, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. This significant event marks a new chapter for the region as the organization aims to strengthen its efforts in promoting tourism and economic development.

In a recent press statement, Mrs. Faith Esohe Essien, Vice President for the South-South at FTAN, highlighted that the inauguration will signify the start of active initiatives by the Federation in the region. This comes after the recent assumption of office by the new national Executive Council, led by Dr. Aliyu Badaki, who has taken on the role of President.

Essien emphasized that the ceremony represents more than just a formal event. “This ceremony marks the official launch of a focused regional effort to transform our sector, positioning tourism as a strategic solution to some of the region’s long-standing economic challenges,” she said.

A Theme of Sustainability and Inclusivity

The inauguration will be centered around the theme “Green Horizons: Unlocking the South-South’s Natural Wealth for Inclusive and Sustainable Prosperity.” Essien explained that this theme reflects a deeper commitment from the Federation to leverage tourism as a tool for economic diversification.

“This theme is not merely ceremonial; it represents a policy commitment to use tourism as a means to drive economic diversification, promote responsible coastal conservation, and elevate our cultural assets as sustainable alternatives to resource dependency,” she added.

The event will take place at Ogeyi’s Place, GRA, Port Harcourt. It is expected to draw participation from members of the federation, key stakeholders, government officials, and travelers from the South-South region, which includes Edo, Delta, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states. Additionally, attendees from other parts of the country are anticipated to join the proceedings.

Dr. Badaki, the National President of FTAN, will lead the national officers of the organization and other guests during the inauguration ceremony. His presence underscores the importance of the event and the collective effort to advance the tourism sector in the region.

Key Objectives of the New Executive Council

The newly formed Executive Council is expected to focus on several key objectives:

  • Economic Diversification:Promote tourism as an alternative source of income, reducing reliance on traditional sectors such as oil and gas.
  • Sustainable Development:Encourage eco-friendly practices in tourism to preserve the region’s natural resources.
  • Cultural Preservation:Highlight the rich cultural heritage of the South-South, using it as a unique selling point for tourism.
  • Community Engagement:Work closely with local communities to ensure that tourism benefits all stakeholders.

The Role of Tourism in Regional Growth

Tourism has the potential to play a crucial role in the economic transformation of the South-South region. With its diverse landscapes, including beaches, forests, and cultural sites, the area offers a wide range of opportunities for both domestic and international tourists.

The new Executive Council is expected to collaborate with various stakeholders, including local governments, private sector entities, and community leaders, to develop strategies that support sustainable tourism growth.

By focusing on inclusive and sustainable prosperity, the council aims to create jobs, generate revenue, and improve the quality of life for residents in the region.
