A Dream Realized for Young Cricket Talent
Kathmandu, Nov. 7 — A crowd of nearly 1,000 young athletes gathered at the Mulpani-based One Day Cricket Academy on Wednesday for a talent hunt event organized by the Kathmandu Gorkhas. Their goal was simple yet ambitious: to be chosen as the ‘iconic player’ for the franchise in the upcoming Nepal Premier League (NPL).
The competition was fierce, with only one individual from the large group expected to secure a spot in the Gorkhas’ squad for the second edition of the NPL. As time passed, the coaching staff led by Basanta Shahi meticulously evaluated the participants and narrowed the list down to 60 players based on their performances.
Further rounds of evaluation reduced the number to just 17 candidates. Among them, one standout performer captured the attention of the entire coaching team—Natarajan Shah, a left-arm pacer whose skills and potential impressed everyone involved.
“I am extremely happy,” Shah said after being selected for the squad. “I have always dreamed of playing at the highest level, and I have been training for it. I even spent one year in Bangalore, India, before returning three or four months ago.”
Shah will earn Rs100,000 as his salary for participating in the NPL, marking a significant milestone in his cricketing career.
Development Team Members Also Selected
In addition to Shah, five other players were chosen for the Gorkhas’ development team. These include Atharva Paudel, Shardul Bhatta, Bipin Neupane, Sonu Devkota, and Ringjin Lama. They will train alongside the main squad and receive Rs25,000 each as compensation for their participation.
This selection process highlights the growing interest in cricket among young athletes in Nepal. The Kathmandu Gorkhas’ initiative not only provides opportunities for aspiring players but also contributes to the development of local talent.
The Road Ahead
For Natarajan Shah, the journey is just beginning. With the support of the Gorkhas’ coaching staff and the backing of his community, he now has a chance to showcase his abilities on a larger stage. His experience in Bangalore has undoubtedly played a role in shaping his skills, and this opportunity could be the stepping stone he needs to reach greater heights.
As the second edition of the NPL approaches, fans are eagerly waiting to see how the new players perform. The inclusion of young talents like Shah and the development team members signals a positive shift in the way cricket is being nurtured in Nepal.
Conclusion
The talent hunt event organized by the Kathmandu Gorkhas serves as a testament to the passion and dedication of young cricketers in the country. It not only identifies promising individuals but also provides them with a platform to grow and succeed. With continued investment in grassroots development, Nepal’s cricket scene is poised for a bright future.
