Kenyan Ministry Urges Citizens to Share Information on Distressed Nationals in Tanzania
The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has issued a public appeal to Kenyans, particularly those with family members in Tanzania, to provide the names, addresses, and emergency contact details of any individuals who may be in distress following post-election violence in the neighboring country. This call comes as concerns grow over the perceived slow response from authorities in tracking the safety of Kenyan citizens affected by the unrest.
In a notice released on Thursday, the Ministry acknowledged the rising public concern and stated that it had taken note of the worries raised by Kenyans. It emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all Kenyan nationals abroad are accounted for. The statement urged Kenyans to share information about any individuals who might be at risk, including details of relatives who can be contacted for assistance.
“Dear Kenyans, the Ministry has heard your concerns and requests that you share the names and addresses of all Kenyans who may be exposed to any sort of danger in our neighboring or far-away countries,” the notice read. “If possible, please include the name and contact information of a relative with whom the Ministry, the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, and Kenya Missions abroad — including the Kenya High Commission in Tanzania — can work.”
Growing Concerns Over Government Response
The ministry’s appeal follows mounting criticism from online platforms and civic groups, which have accused Kenyan authorities of not acting swiftly enough to verify the safety of citizens living in Tanzania. Violent protests erupted after the October 29 General Election, leading to a crackdown by Tanzanian security forces. While the exact number of Kenyans affected remains unclear, reports suggest that several may have been caught in the unrest.
The Ministry reminded Kenyans that registering with Kenyan missions abroad is a legal requirement outlined in the Kenyan passport. This provision is designed to help facilitate assistance during emergencies. “Let us all work together to secure the best interests of our brothers and sisters wherever they may be,” the statement said. It also assured that all information received would be shared immediately with Kenya’s missions abroad for swift action.
Reassurance from Kenya High Commission
Earlier, the Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam sought to calm fears among Kenyans in Tanzania, confirming that calm had largely returned after the country’s tense elections. The mission emphasized that the welfare and safety of Kenyan residents remain a top priority. “The High Commission encourages Kenyans in Tanzania to continue with their lawful normal activities as usual,” the statement read.
The Mission reported that it had resumed full operations and was working closely with Tanzanian authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of Kenyan nationals. Those in distress were advised to contact the Mission through its emergency lines: +255 22 2668285/6.
This reassurance followed the lifting of a night curfew and the restoration of public services after nearly a week of unrest in major Tanzanian cities, including Dar es Salaam. Clashes between security forces and opposition protesters had disrupted daily life during this period.

The unrest erupted after President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of the election with 98 percent of the vote — a result that the opposition party CHADEMA dismissed as a “sham exercise carried out under intimidation, mass arrests, and a media blackout.” A preliminary observer report by the African Union Election Observation Mission concluded that the polls “did not meet democratic standards.”
During her swearing-in ceremony in Dodoma, President Suluhu vowed to defend Tanzania’s sovereignty “through all means and at any cost,” warning against foreign interference as the country works to restore order.
