Murkomen, North Rift Leaders Push for Mining Reforms Amid Rising Insecurity

Addressing Insecurity in the North Rift

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, along with elected leaders from Turkana and West Pokot counties, has taken a decisive step to address the growing challenges of insecurity in the North Rift region. The decision comes after a high-level consultative meeting aimed at streamlining mining activities, which have been linked to rising tensions in the area.

The meeting was convened by Murkomen following recent incidents of insecurity in Kainuk, a region that spans both Turkana and West Pokot counties. This area has long been known for its volatility, and the latest developments have prompted urgent discussions on how to restore stability.

Focus on Security and Social Cohesion

During the meeting, the participants emphasized the need to strengthen security measures and promote social cohesion in the region. Murkomen highlighted that while the area has generally remained peaceful, recent incidents have underscored the importance of collective action.

“We resolved to fast-track the ongoing streamlining of mining activities, which have been identified as fueling insecurity in the region and other parts of the country,” he stated. The CS pointed out that the unregulated nature of mining operations has contributed to conflict, particularly in areas where communities rely heavily on these activities for their livelihoods.

A Warning Against Political Interference

Murkomen also issued a strong warning to political leaders against making inflammatory remarks or attempting to politicize ongoing security operations. He stressed that any individual who undermines the enforcement efforts would face legal consequences.

“I have put on notice leaders making inflammatory remarks to desist from politicizing their predicament when the law catches up with them. Our intelligence-led operation will dismantle all the criminal networks involved and bring to book any of our officers colluding with them,” he said. This message was intended to ensure that security operations remain focused on restoring order without interference.

Enhancing Peace Dialogues and Administrative Coordination

In addition to addressing security concerns, the leaders agreed to enhance inter-community peace dialogues once the current security operations are completed. They emphasized the importance of operationalizing gazetted administrative units in areas prone to insecurity, which would improve coordination and service delivery.

This approach aims to foster better communication between local communities and government authorities, ensuring that the needs of the people are met effectively. It also seeks to build trust between different groups, which is essential for long-term stability in the region.

Key Participants in the Meeting

The meeting brought together several key figures, including Turkana Senator James Lomenen and West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor. Other attendees included County MP Rael Kasiwai (West Pokot) and MPs Daniel Nanok (Turkana West), Protus Akujah (Loima), Ekwom Nabuin (Turkana North), Peter Lochokapong (Sigor), and Titus Lotee (Kacheliba).

Murkomen was accompanied by GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, Principal Administrative Secretaries Jacob Narengo (Internal Security) and Beverly Opwora (National Administration), as well as Secretary for National Administration Moses Lilan.

Moving Forward

The decisions made during the meeting reflect a commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity in the North Rift. By focusing on security, governance, and community engagement, the leaders aim to create a safer and more stable environment for all residents.

As the region continues to grapple with the challenges of mining and conflict, the collaboration between government officials and local leaders remains crucial. With sustained efforts and a focus on transparency, there is hope for meaningful progress in the coming months.
