Lagos State Initiates Major Road Rehabilitation Project
The Lagos State Government has launched a significant rehabilitation project on the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway. This initiative focuses on the stretch from the Admiralty Way Junction to the Jubilee Bridge section in Ajah, located within the Eti-Osa Local Government Area and Eti-Osa East LCDA.
During a stakeholders’ meeting held in Lagos, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Infrastructure, Tokunbo Oyenuga, announced that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had given the go-ahead for the project. The rehabilitation efforts are part of the administration’s broader commitment to building durable road networks and improving the quality of life for residents across the state.
Enhancing Mobility and Economic Growth
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, emphasized the importance of this project in reducing travel time for commuters. He stated that the government has prioritized road rehabilitation to address the challenges posed by deteriorating infrastructure.
Daramola highlighted the significance of the project, saying:
“The immediate commencement further attests to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s resolve to mitigate the risks associated with the poor condition of the road, create a safer environment for all road users, facilitate the efficient movement of goods and services, which is crucial for the continued economic development of the state. It is a demonstration of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to continue to provide infrastructure that will support businesses, enhance trade and commerce.”
Addressing Traffic Challenges in a Growing Corridor
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, pointed out that the Lekki Corridor is experiencing unprecedented growth. With key developments such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the Dangote Refinery, and other industries in the area, traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly.
Osiyemi described the Lekki Corridor as one of the fastest-developing areas in Africa. He noted that the region’s economic activity is driving higher traffic, which presents new challenges for the transportation network.
He added:
“The numbers we have here are bigger than the average, and we cannot take for granted that we will, from time to time, face challenges, but we must find a way to deal with them. This is why we are all gathered here to try and find the solution.”
A Strategic Investment for the Future
The rehabilitation of the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway is not just about fixing potholes or repairing damaged roads—it is a strategic investment in the future of Lagos. By upgrading the infrastructure, the state aims to support its growing economy, improve connectivity, and ensure the safety of all road users.
This project also reflects the government’s vision of creating a more sustainable and efficient transportation system. As the Lekki Corridor continues to develop, maintaining and enhancing its road networks will be essential to sustaining its momentum.
Key Objectives of the Project
- Improve Road Safety:Ensuring that the expressway meets modern safety standards.
- Reduce Travel Time:Enhancing the efficiency of movement for both commuters and commercial vehicles.
- Support Economic Activities:Facilitating the smooth flow of goods and services through the corridor.
- Prepare for Increased Traffic:Adapting infrastructure to accommodate future growth and development.
As the project moves forward, it will be closely monitored to ensure that it meets the needs of the community and aligns with the long-term goals of the Lagos State Government. The successful completion of this initiative could serve as a model for future infrastructure projects in the region.
