Jigawa State is taking a significant step forward in its healthcare journey, with Governor Umar Namadi making a bold commitment to support the expansion and renovation of the Rasheed Shekoni Federal University Teaching Hospital. The Origins of the Hospital
The hospital’s history can be traced back to the military administration of Colonel Rasheed Shekoni, who served as the Military Administrator of Jigawa State from August 22, 1996, to July 29, 1998. During his tenure, initial groundwork was laid for the development of healthcare infrastructure in the state. Although the project gained momentum later, it was under the leadership of Governor Sule Lamido (2007–2015) that the facility was fully completed and inaugurated in 2014. It was officially named after Colonel Shekoni to honor his contributions to public service.
Initially, the hospital operated as a state-owned specialist facility, focusing on addressing critical healthcare needs such as maternal care and rural medical services. In 2019, during the tenure of Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, the hospital was transferred to federal control, aiming to upgrade it into a teaching hospital affiliated with the Federal University Dutse. This affiliation has allowed for advanced medical training and national-level service delivery.
Current Status and Role in Medical Training
Today, the hospital stands as a vital training ground for medical students from the Federal University Dutse. Governor’s Commitment and Vision
Governor Umar Namadi made these commitments during a meeting with the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Salisu Mu’azu, and his team. The visit was a courtesy call to the Jigawa State Government House in Dutse, where the governor emphasized the importance of prioritizing the hiring of local professionals.
Namadi highlighted the state’s deep investment in the hospital’s success and urged the management to focus on employing Jigawa indigenes. He pointed out that the state is home to numerous professionals eager to contribute to the healthcare sector.
“Jigawa boasts numerous professionals and experts eager to serve—let’s ensure our people get fair shots at these vital roles,” Namadi said, reaffirming his administration’s ongoing support for high-quality healthcare delivery.
In addition to advocating for local employment, the governor promised additional land for expansion projects and pledged to assist in renovating the hospital’s dilapidated structures. This initiative aims to increase the hospital’s capacity to serve more patients.
“The government will provide that extra land and assist in renovating worn-out buildings—together, we’ll make RSFUTH a beacon of health for our people,” Namadi added.

Dr. Salisu Mu’azu, the CMD of RSFUTH, described the visit as a formal introduction and a plea for continued state support in overcoming operational challenges. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that 870 workers are now on the federal payroll, with over 250 hailing from Jigawa.
“So far, we’ve enrolled 870 staff federally, and more than 250 are proud Jigawa indigenes—it’s progress we celebrate,” he said, crediting the state’s collaboration for this achievement.
Mu’azu praised the Namadi government’s efforts in facilitating the hospital’s operations and called for joint action on pressing issues like equipment needs and infrastructure strains. He emphasized the importance of continued state support to address these challenges and improve services for Jigawa residents.
