Miss Universe Contestants Exit After Organizer’s Offensive Comments

Controversy Erupts Before Miss Universe Pageant in Bangkok

A significant incident occurred ahead of the 74th Miss Universe Grand Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, when a group of contestants walked out of an event due to what they perceived as disrespectful behavior by an organizer. The controversy unfolded during a preliminary event held on the 4th, which was intended to set the stage for the upcoming pageant.

A Public Reprimand and Escalating Tensions

During the event, a high-ranking official from the organizing committee, Nawart Ichalagrisil, the Miss Universe Thailand director, made headlines after singling out Mexico’s representative, Fatima Bosch. He criticized her for not complying with the committee’s requests, specifically regarding social media promotion. Earlier, the committee had asked contestants to post promotional content online, but Bosch responded that she needed to consult with Mexico’s responsible party.

Nawart interpreted this as a refusal to cooperate and publicly reprimanded Bosch. His remarks were harsh, stating, “If you’re going to follow the Mexican representative’s instructions, then you’re a dummy.” When Bosch attempted to respond, Nawart raised his voice, saying, “I’m not done speaking. Listen.” He then called security personnel to escort Bosch out of the venue, causing a reaction among the other contestants.

Mass Walkout and Public Outcry

Bosch eventually left the event, followed by several other contestants, including Denmark’s Victoria Kyer Teibwehi, who had won the title the previous year. Despite the disruption, Nawart remained unfazed and threatened to continue the event with the remaining contestants, instructing security to close the door.

The incident, which was broadcast live online, sparked widespread criticism of Nawart’s conduct. As public outrage grew, the organizing committee released an emergency statement indicating that legal action, including the removal of Nawart’s authority, was under consideration.

Apology and Continued Events

Later, at an official press conference, Nawart offered a tearful apology, stating, “I never intended to hurt anyone.” On the following day, the Miss Universe opening ceremony proceeded as planned, with Bosch, Miss Mexico, in attendance. Nawart took the stage again, expressing his regret and saying, “Please understand the pressure I was under. I respect all of you and never intended to harm anyone.”

Looking Ahead to the Grand Finals

As the pageant moves forward, the Miss Universe Grand Finals are scheduled to take place in Thailand on the 21st. The events leading up to the finals have already drawn significant attention, highlighting the challenges and complexities involved in organizing such a high-profile international event.

The controversy surrounding Nawart’s actions has raised questions about the conduct of organizers and the treatment of participants in global beauty pageants. It also underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and respect in such settings, where cultural and national differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.

For now, the focus remains on the upcoming Grand Finals, where the world will once again witness the talents and aspirations of beauty pageant contestants from around the globe.
