Prepare for Key Offensive Against Terrorists, COAS Instructs Troops

Leadership and Strategic Focus in the North-East

Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has delivered a strong message to the troops engaged in Operation Hadin Kai in Borno. His address emphasized the need for preparedness as the military moves into a critical phase of its counter-insurgency efforts against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists. The COAS warned that complacency is not an option, urging the soldiers to remain vigilant and focused on achieving a decisive victory.

During his visit to the theatre command headquarters in Maiduguri, Shaibu highlighted the importance of this stage in the campaign, which he described as pivotal in restoring peace to the region. He reminded the troops that they have been trained specifically to combat the insurgents who have caused so much disruption in the North-East. “This time, you are going to do it differently,” he stated, adding that all necessary combat enablers have been provided, along with new platforms designed to enhance their effectiveness.

The COAS also called on the soldiers to surpass the achievements of their predecessors, acknowledging the immense responsibility that now rests on their shoulders. He expressed confidence in their ability to succeed, saying, “Those before you have done it. This is your time.” His words were met with a sense of determination among the troops, many of whom have lost colleagues and endured harsh conditions during previous missions.

Strengthening Combat Capabilities

Shaibu emphasized that very battle-tested officers have been deployed to the theatre, ensuring that the troops are supported by experienced leadership. He reiterated that all combat enablers have been made available, and new platforms have been introduced to improve operational efficiency. These measures are intended to ensure that the troops can carry out their mission effectively and achieve the desired outcomes.

Despite the weakened state of Boko Haram and ISWAP, the groups continue to exploit difficult terrain and porous borders to launch isolated attacks. The COAS acknowledged this challenge but remained confident in the capabilities of the Nigerian Army to neutralize these threats.

Focus on Soldier Welfare

In addition to addressing the military strategy, Shaibu also spoke about the welfare of the troops. He highlighted improvements in allowances, prompt payments, and better medical care. “Your welfare has been taken care of, from improved ration cost allowance to better healthcare. We will continue to improve your well-being,” he said.

He also announced plans for increased investment in accommodation and education for soldiers’ families. “We will ensure your children attend the best schools — our command and Army children’s schools,” he added. His remarks were met with applause from the troops, reflecting their appreciation for the attention given to their well-being.

A Unified Call to Action

As the COAS concluded his address, he reinforced the importance of unity and commitment. “You have done it before, and this time you will do it very well,” he said. He then posed a question to the troops: “Are you assuring me you will give your best?” The response was immediate and resolute: “Yes, Sir!”

The soldiers’ unified response underscored their readiness to face the challenges ahead. With a renewed sense of purpose and support, the troops are now preparing for the next phase of operations, determined to bring lasting peace to the North-East.
