Security officers killed in Niger ambush, lawmakers mourn

Legislative Condemnation of Attack on Lawmaker’s Convoy

The House of Representatives has strongly condemned the recent armed ambush targeting the convoy of Jafaru Mohammed Ali, a lawmaker representing the Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency in Niger State. The incident has been labeled as a cowardly and tragic attack that has left a deep mark on the nation.

The attack reportedly took place on Tuesday afternoon along the Lumma–Babanna Road in the Borgu Local Government Area. This region is known for its high levels of bandit activity and frequent cross-border movements of armed groups. The incident occurred between 1pm and 2pm as the lawmaker’s convoy was heading toward Babanna, a community located near the border with the Republic of Benin.

In a statement released by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, on Friday, the Green Chamber expressed deep concern over the attack. According to the statement, the ambush resulted in the deaths of several security operatives, injuries to the lawmaker’s driver and aides, and damage to multiple vehicles in the convoy.

The statement highlighted that the attack happened while the lawmaker was traveling to engage with his constituents. It emphasized the remote nature of the location, underscoring the dedication of Honorable Members in ensuring that constituency services reach even the most challenging areas.

“The cowardly attack reportedly resulted in the death of gallant security operatives, injuries to his driver and aides, and extensive damage to several vehicles in the convoy,” the statement read.

The House expressed deep mourning for the brave operatives who lost their lives in the line of duty and extended heartfelt condolences to their families, the relevant security agencies, and the people of Niger State. The House also wished the injured a speedy recovery and called for a thorough investigation into the attack, urging security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Reiterating its commitment to the safety of citizens and lawmakers, the Green Chamber pledged continued legislative support to the executive and security agencies in the collective effort to eradicate terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality threatening national peace and stability.

Escalating Violence in Niger State

Communities in Niger, particularly those around the border corridor, have become increasingly dangerous in recent months due to heightened activities of bandits and terrorists. The situation has deteriorated significantly, with several violent incidents reported in different parts of the state.

On September 17, PUNCH Online reported that gunmen on motorbikes shot dead 22 villagers in the western area of the state. Most of the victims were attending a baptism ceremony. The shootings took place in the Tillaberi area, near Burkina Faso and Mali, where jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group are active.

A local resident described the events, stating that 15 people were killed first at a baptism ceremony in Takoubatt village. “The attackers then went to the outskirts of Takoubatt where they killed seven other people,” the resident said, requesting anonymity for security reasons.

In June, no fewer than 17 soldiers were killed in a fierce gun duel with suspected bandits in the Bangi community, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The violent confrontation occurred at about 11 p.m., following intelligence reports that armed bandits were advancing towards Bangi, a notorious corridor for criminal activity, including kidnappings and cattle rustling.
