Stephen Apemah-Baah, a former student of Opoku Ware School (OWASS), has shared his reflections on the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) and discussed his future aspirations. In an interview, he also addressed how criticism—whether constructive or destructive—impacts him.
This comes at a time when Mfantsipim School claimed victory in the NSMQ for the fourth time this year. Despite not winning the competition in his three attempts, Stephen has earned widespread admiration and respect from Ghanaians across the country.
In a video posted by Joy News on its Facebook page on Friday, November 7, Stephen reflected on his journey through the NSMQ and outlined his plans for the future.
During the interview, he spoke about his educational goals and expressed his intention to pursue higher education. “Opinions shouldn’t matter to you if you have a strong mindset,” he said. “Whatever be the case, win or lose, what is next for Stephen? Life continues as always, so there are lots of other things done in the same career in life. And maybe I haven’t even lived half of my life yet, so I think the next thing would be my university, going to university, and lots of other things that haven’t even unfolded.”
When asked how he deals with negative criticism, Stephen emphasized the importance of self-belief. “Honestly, I built this strong mindset about myself that whatever people say about me, I know myself far better than anyone else. So whatever people say about me shouldn’t get to me because the moment it gets into your mind, it’s very difficult to get it out.”
The video resurfaced after Opoku Ware School fell short in the final of the 2025 NSMQ. This year’s competition saw Mfantsipim School take first place with 56 points, followed by St. Augustine’s College with 42 points, and OWASS finishing third with 29 points.
Primetime honours Stephen Apemah-Baah
The organizers of the NSMQ recognized Stephen’s achievements by presenting him with an award for his consistent performance in reaching the finals on two occasions. He was also given a cash prize of 5,000 cedis as a token of appreciation for his contributions to the quiz.
Ghanaians who commented on the video praised Stephen for his positive attitude and impact on the competition. Naa Ayorkor Agbenyegah wrote: “You’ll go places with this attitude. Great mindset. Congrats anyway. You’re a hero and pray your old boys spoil you with sponsorships.”
Robert Adabogo added: “He’s indeed a legend and a role model, and most of us wanted this to be his crowning moment. His name is etched deep in the annals of NSMQ history. Congratulations, champ!”
