Tinubu Awaits Panel Report on Plateau Killings

Investigation into Plateau State Violence

President Bola Tinubu is anticipated to receive a detailed report from the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee, which has been investigating the persistent killings in Plateau State. The committee is now preparing to recommend decisive actions aimed at ending the prolonged conflict.

The committee chairman, Wale Ahmed, revealed this during a visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja. Ahmed stated that the panel is concluding its discussions with key stakeholders and plans to submit its findings to both the House and the President soon. He emphasized that the President has demonstrated a strong commitment to restoring peace in Plateau and other troubled regions of the country.

“At the end of our consultations, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the House and to Mr President, who as Commander-in-Chief, has shown great interest in achieving lasting peace in Plateau State and the entire country,” Ahmed explained.

The committee has engaged with over 300 individuals and organizations, including former Governor Joshua Dariye, traditional rulers, civil society groups, opinion leaders, and security agencies. They have also received numerous memoranda, including from the immediate past Commander of Operation Safe Haven, General Rogers, who appeared before the panel to share his insights.

Ahmed noted that the submissions from these stakeholders are helping the committee identify the main causes of the violence and potential pathways to peace. These findings will serve as the foundation for the final report to be presented to Tinubu.

Impact of the Crisis

Yilwatda praised the House’s intervention, highlighting how the crisis has significantly affected economic and social activities in the state. He pointed out that the situation has damaged Plateau’s tourism and investment prospects.

“We have lost countless lives and seen businesses shut down. Many now see Plateau as unsafe,” he said, underlining the urgency of government action.

The House established the investigation panel on March 31, 2024, following a motion of urgent national importance proposed by lawmakers Ishaya Lalu and Dalyop Chollom. This motion was adopted during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Key Stakeholders and Findings

The committee’s work has involved extensive engagement with various stakeholders, ensuring a thorough understanding of the issues at hand. Some of the key participants include:

  • Former Governor Joshua Dariye: His insights provided valuable historical context regarding the state of affairs in Plateau.
  • Traditional Rulers: Their perspectives offered cultural and community-based understanding of the conflicts.
  • Civil Society Groups: These organizations brought attention to the grassroots impact of the violence.
  • Opinion Leaders: Their input helped highlight public sentiment and concerns.
  • Security Agencies: Their reports and analyses contributed to the understanding of the security challenges faced in the region.

Additionally, the committee received several memoranda, including those from General Rogers, who shared critical information about the security operations in the area.

Pathways to Peace

Through these engagements, the committee has identified several factors contributing to the violence in Plateau State. These include:

  • Ethnic tensions: Ongoing disputes between different ethnic groups have led to recurring conflicts.
  • Resource competition: Disputes over land and natural resources have exacerbated existing tensions.
  • Inadequate governance: Weak local governance structures have failed to address the root causes of the violence.
  • Lack of security: Insufficient security measures have allowed the violence to persist.

The committee’s report aims to provide actionable recommendations to address these issues and restore peace in the region. It is expected that the findings will guide future policies and interventions aimed at preventing further bloodshed.

Conclusion

As the committee prepares to submit its final report, the focus remains on finding sustainable solutions to the ongoing crisis in Plateau State. The involvement of various stakeholders ensures that the report will be comprehensive and reflective of the diverse perspectives within the community.

With the President’s commitment to restoring peace, there is hope that the recommendations from the committee will lead to meaningful change. The path forward requires coordinated efforts from all sectors of society to ensure lasting peace and stability in Plateau and beyond.
