Security Measures and Protests Surround Aston Villa’s Europa League Match
Aston Villa secured a 2-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday, but the match was overshadowed by tight security measures in Birmingham. The game took place amid concerns over safety, with traveling fans from Maccabi Tel Aviv being barred from attending.
Approximately 700 police officers were deployed around Villa Park to manage the situation as pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters held separate demonstrations outside the stadium before the kickoff. Despite the tensions, the protests remained largely peaceful, with authorities reporting six arrests for offenses ranging from racial aggravation to failure to comply with dispersal orders.
Villa had previously announced that no Maccabi fans would be allowed at the match following a police risk assessment. This decision drew criticism, including from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who attempted to reverse the move. However, the Israeli club later decided not to send its fans anyway, citing their own safety concerns.
Outside the stadium, about 200 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered on one side, chanting “Free Palestine” and displaying banners calling for a boycott of Israel and its exclusion from international football. On the other side, a small group of pro-Israel protesters waved Israeli flags and held posters stating “Keep anti-Semitism out of football.”
On the pitch, Aston Villa took the lead just one minute into first-half added time through Ian Maatsen. Donyell Malen doubled the lead shortly before the hour mark, helping Unai Emery’s side accumulate nine points after four matches.
“(It was a) good evening,” said Villa manager Emery in an interview with TNT Sports. “Focus and respecting the competition and the teams. We were playing solidly and playing seriously.”
