17 Years Since I Last Saw My Wife After She Left Me for My Poverty — Husband

A Long-Lasting Divorce Case

A divorce case that has lasted for years is currently being heard at the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State. The court has decided to adjourn the hearing until December 3 for further deliberation. The case was initiated by a man named Lamidi against his wife, Jemila, on the grounds of desertion.

Lamidi claims that Jemila left their marriage during a period of financial difficulty and took with her his belongings. He also stated that he has not seen her for 17 years. According to him, he no longer wants any contact with Jemila because he has married another woman. The plaintiff requested the court to stop Jemila from using his name.

Jemila, however, denies all the allegations made against her. She insists that it was Lamidi who forced her out of their home. In her response, she said, “My lord, he was the one who sent me packing. He told me to pack all my belongings and move out of his house. He frustrated every effort I made to get in touch with him.”

The Background of the Marriage

Lamidi provided detailed evidence during the court proceedings. He mentioned that he and Jemila got married 33 years ago, but their marriage did not result in any children. Their relationship was reportedly affected by a financial crisis that persisted over the years. Lamidi explained that Jemila struggled to cope with the situation and eventually left him.

He described how Jemila walked out of their lives 17 years ago, and he has not seen her since then. According to him, she not only abandoned him but also took his belongings with her. After this, Lamidi went abroad for nine years in search of better opportunities. Upon returning, he married another woman. Since he cannot have two wives, he asked the court to dissolve his marriage to Jemila and ensure that she no longer uses his name.

The Court’s Decision

The president of the court, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, listened to both parties before deciding to adjourn the case. The court will continue the proceedings on December 3 to hear more evidence and make a final decision.

This case highlights the complexities of long-term marriages and the emotional toll that desertion can take on individuals. It also raises questions about the legal processes involved in ending such relationships, especially when there are multiple parties involved.
