KDI Calls for Neutrality and Professionalism in Anambra State Governorship Poll
The Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting democratic integrity, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to maintain neutrality and professionalism throughout the conduct of the Anambra State Governorship poll. This appeal was made during a pre-election press conference and stakeholders’ engagement held in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.
Mr Bukola Idowu, the Executive Director of KDI, highlighted several concerns that could potentially undermine the election process. He pointed out that the late arrival of materials and the delayed commencement of voting could create challenges. Additionally, he noted the incompetence of INEC ad-hoc staff and the malfunctioning of Biometric Voter Authentication Systems (BVAs), which could negatively impact voter turnout.
Idowu also expressed concern over the conclusion of training for the INEC ad-hoc staff just two days before the election, leaving no time for refresher courses. He further emphasized the need for more security officers to be deployed to the state to ensure a smooth electoral process.
“KDI expects a largely peaceful election but emphasises that the credibility of the process will depend on timely deployment, transparent procedures, and restraints by political actors and their supporters. We call on eligible voters to come out peacefully, exercise their civic rights and resist any attempt to disrupt the process or sell their votes,” he stated.
Monitoring and Observers
Under its Strengthening Electoral Accountability Project (SEAP), funded by the FCDO/PACO programme, KDI has been actively monitoring the electoral environment in Anambra State. The organisation has trained and deployed observers across polling units through its NEVER project, ensuring that the election is conducted with transparency and accountability.
Key Concerns Raised
During the press conference, several key issues were raised:
- Late Arrival of Materials: Delays in the delivery of election materials could lead to confusion and inefficiencies at polling units.
- Incompetence of Ad-Hoc Staff: The lack of proper training and preparation of temporary staff may affect the smooth running of the election.
- BVAs Malfunctioning: Technical issues with biometric systems could hinder the voting process and reduce voter confidence.
- Lack of Refresher Courses: The abrupt end of training for ad-hoc staff without follow-up sessions may compromise the quality of service during the election.
Call for Civic Participation
Idowu urged eligible voters to participate in the election peacefully and to exercise their civic rights. He also warned against any attempts to disrupt the process or sell votes, emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
Additional Content
The press conference also featured discussions on various topics related to the upcoming election, including the role of security agencies, the importance of voter education, and the need for political actors to respect the rule of law.
Conclusion
As the Anambra State Governorship poll approaches, KDI remains committed to ensuring that the election is free, fair, and transparent. The organisation continues to monitor developments closely and will provide updates as necessary.
