Gondar Steps into the “Second Era of Civilization,” Says DPM Temesgen

Addis Ababa, November 7, 2025 – Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has announced the start of what he calls Gondar’s “second era of civilization,” signaling a new phase in the city’s historical rebirth.

In a social media post, the Deputy Prime Minister reflected on the restoration of Fasiledes Castle, an ancient structure that had been neglected for centuries. He described the castle as having “waited for its death” after being left to decay for 400 years. Temesgen praised the efforts of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who led the project to revive the monument. He likened the transformation to an eagle rising from the ashes, emphasizing the significance of this achievement.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted improvements in the city’s infrastructure. A major focus was the renovation of the Gondar road from Azazo to Piazza. He described the newly rebuilt route as “beautiful, useful, and comfortable,” calling it a symbol of the city’s progress. This development marks a shift in how the city is perceived, with modernization becoming a key feature of its identity.

Another significant project mentioned by Temesgen was the revitalization of the Megech River. Once seen as stagnant and unchanging, the river has undergone a transformation. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the river’s story has changed from one of stagnation to one of renewal. He described it as a place where “falling and rising” have become possible, and where “tiredness has turned into strength.”

Temesgen concluded his statement by stating that the river has reached a crucial milestone, which he views as the beginning of Gondar’s renewed civilization. His remarks reflect a broader vision for the city, one that combines historical preservation with modern development.
