Israeli Strikes in Lebanon Result in Casualties
Israeli military operations in Lebanon on Saturday led to the deaths of three individuals and left several others injured, as reported by the Lebanese health ministry. The strikes targeted a group affiliated with Hezbollah, specifically arms smugglers, according to Israel’s military. The Lebanese National News Agency reported that two brothers from the town of Shebaa were killed while traveling on a road near Mount Hermon in southeastern Lebanon. Their SUV caught fire as a result of the attack, leading to their tragic deaths. The Israeli military confirmed that one of its strikes had taken place near Shebaa, resulting in the death of two smugglers associated with the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, a group linked to Hezbollah.
In a statement, the Israeli military emphasized that the individuals involved were engaged in smuggling weapons used by Hezbollah. They described these activities as a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement aimed at ending more than a year of hostilities with the Iran-backed militant group. The military also warned that it would continue its operations to eliminate any threats to the State of Israel.
Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed the casualties in Shebaa and later reported that another strike in the southern village of Baraashit resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others. A similar attack on Saturday morning near a hospital in the southern city of Bint Jbeil left seven people wounded, according to the ministry.
International Concern Over Continued Attacks
The recent attacks have drawn attention from the international community, particularly the European Union. The EU has expressed concern over Israel’s continued strikes despite the nearly year-old truce. Anouar El Anouni, the foreign affairs spokesman for the European Commission, stated that all parties must focus on preserving the ceasefire and the progress made so far.
Israel maintains that Lebanon is not acting quickly enough to disarm Hezbollah and insists on its right to conduct operations to protect its border and citizens from potential attacks. On Thursday, Israel announced a series of strikes in southern Lebanon in advance, urging civilians to evacuate the targeted areas.
