Pakistan and UK Strengthen Trade Ties Under New Dialogue Framework

Strengthening Economic Ties Between Pakistan and the United Kingdom

Pakistan and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic cooperation through the newly established Pak-UK Trade Dialogue Mechanism. This initiative aims to expand bilateral trade and investment, fostering stronger economic ties between the two nations.

During a recent meeting, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, met with the UK’s Minister of State for Trade Policy, Chris Bryant. The discussion focused on reviewing progress on the framework and exploring steps to operationalize its implementation.

Prof. Iqbal emphasized that Pakistan and the UK share a long-standing relationship rooted in strong cultural and people-to-people ties. He highlighted that it is now time to strengthen this partnership on the economic front. “With £5.5 billion in bilateral trade, we have only touched the surface. The Trade Dialogue Mechanism must now become the engine that unlocks our true economic potential,” he stated.

He called for the swift activation of the three working groups formed under the framework to address priority areas and explore new commercial opportunities. These working groups are expected to play a crucial role in identifying key sectors for collaboration and enhancing trade efficiency.

Minister Bryant welcomed the initiative signed in July 2025, noting that it provides for annual ministerial engagements and mandates the working groups to become functional within six months. He underscored the need for expert-led discussions on tariffs and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures to enhance trade efficiency.

Prof. Iqbal briefed the UK side on Pakistan’s improving economic indicators, stating that inflation was declining and growth showing signs of recovery. “Pakistan has reversed the economic downturn of recent years. The country is open for business like never before,” he said.

He highlighted Pakistan’s ambition to become a regional investment hub under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, identifying information technology and human resource development as key areas for collaboration. “Pakistan’s greatest asset today is its young, highly skilled tech talent. Deep technology collaboration between Pakistan and the UK can create a new bridge between our economies,” he added.

Both sides also discussed strengthening cooperation in culture, fashion, music, and tourism, with Prof. Iqbal describing these sectors as a “living bridge” between the two nations.

Concluding the meeting, Prof. Iqbal invited Minister Bryant to visit Pakistan, expressing confidence that he would find “a country ready for transformation, investment, and partnership with the world.”
