Addis Ababa, November 7, 2025 – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed conducted a detailed review of the Megech Irrigation Development Project in Gondar, an essential initiative designed to improve agricultural output in the region. The project is considered a cornerstone for sustainable development and food security in the area.
In a recent social media update, the Prime Minister shared insights about the progress made during his visit to Gondar City. He stated, “During our review in Gondar City, we assessed the progress of the Megech Irrigation Development Project.” This statement highlighted the government’s commitment to monitoring and supporting critical infrastructure projects that have long-term benefits for local communities.
The Megech Irrigation Development Project covers a total area of 870 hectares and is projected to irrigate approximately 17,000 hectares of land. This expansion is expected to bring significant changes to the agricultural landscape of the region. By ensuring a consistent water supply, the project aims to increase crop yields and reduce dependency on unpredictable rainfall patterns.
According to the Prime Minister, the project has reached a crucial phase with the successful completion of a key milestone—the river diversion. This step marks a major achievement in the construction process and sets the stage for the next set of activities. The river diversion allows for the controlled flow of water, which is essential for the subsequent stages of the project.
The remaining tasks are currently progressing as planned, and the Prime Minister emphasized that once the Megech dam is fully completed, the irrigation system will deliver substantial benefits to the region. These benefits include improved access to water for farming, better soil fertility, and increased economic opportunities for local farmers.
