Poet Yoon O-suk, hailing from Hampyeong in South Jeolla Province, has recently released her second poetry collection titled‘Soul (Pacific Herring)’. This is the first time she has published a new work after approximately six years. The book consists of 100 serial poems that revolve around the central theme of the soul.
Yoon describes the soul as something that exists even before creation and persists beyond the apocalypse. Through this lens, she explores a wide range of life stories. In an interview with this publication on the 9th, she shared, “I included my own personal story in this collection.” She added, “These are the old tales I used to hear while lying with my head on my mother’s lap during midsummer nights.”
The collection captures moments of rest between tiring farm work, the chaotic lives of children who have moved out, and narratives that blur the boundaries between dreams and reality. With a dry voice, the poet illustrates how emotions like love, pain, joy, and sorrow shape human existence.

Her literary journey began in 2012 when she won theHanmunhakNew Writer’s Award. Her debut collection,‘The Heart of Adonis (Bukin)’, was published in 2019. It featured 59 works, including poems such as‘Pressure Cooker’,‘Sneakers’, and‘Phobia’. These pieces marked the beginning of her unique poetic voice and set the stage for her later explorations into the concept of the soul.
