Artificial intelligence (AI) text detection programs, such as the so-called “GPT Killer,” are becoming increasingly common in universities. These tools analyze sentence structures and vocabulary patterns after being trained on texts generated by large-scale language models (LLMs). Their goal is to identify content that may have been written by AI. Developers of these programs claim a detection accuracy of around 95%. However, despite this high level of confidence, errors are still frequent.

Human-written texts from before the emergence of ChatGPT have been flagged as having an over 80% probability of being AI-generated. Even well-organized and logically sound texts can be incorrectly labeled as AI-written. This has led to real-world consequences, with some applicants being rejected during interviews due to accusations that their self-introduction letters were ghostwritten by AI. This highlights how AI detection results can significantly impact personal career evaluations.

Re-evaluating the Use of AI Detection Tools

In light of these issues, educational institutions should reconsider their reliance on programs like the “GPT Killer.” Generative AI models are designed to learn from vast amounts of human-written text and produce content that closely resembles human writing. As a result, distinguishing between AI and human-generated content may not be possible.

In the United States, “anti-detection evasion” AI programs have even emerged. These tools intentionally alter sentences to avoid grammatical rules and bypass detection systems. This development suggests that the battle between AI detection and evasion is ongoing and complex.

Given this context, it is crucial for institutions to focus on discussing and agreeing on ethical standards and educational principles for AI writing. Rather than relying solely on technological detection, a more comprehensive approach involving guidelines and policies should be prioritized.

The Growing Trend of AI Interviews

Another significant issue is the widespread use of “AI interviews.” In South Korea, more than half of the younger generation prefers AI interviews over traditional human-led ones. This preference reflects a broader societal trend where trust in people is weaker, leading to greater reliance on AI.

One might wonder how deeply cronyism has influenced interviews at companies and public institutions to create such a situation. However, current AI interview programs often do not disclose which models they are based on or what data they were trained with. This lack of transparency raises serious concerns about the reliability and fairness of these systems.

Ensuring Trustworthy AI Use

Public institutions that are trusted by citizens must take the time to evaluate and verify the AI systems they use before implementing them. Using AI itself is not the solution; instead, the focus should be on using trustworthy AI. When the reliability of an AI system is uncertain, its use should be postponed until further verification is completed.

The integration of AI into various aspects of life, including education and employment, requires careful consideration.
