PDP Stakeholders in Ekiti Vow to Reject Attempts to Overturn Primary Election Results
Stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti have expressed strong opposition to any attempts to overturn the results of the recent governorship primary election. The decision by the party’s delegates to choose Dr. Wole Oluyede as their candidate for the June 20, 2026, gubernatorial election has been seen as a reflection of the majority’s will.
Dr. Oluyede, a medical doctor turned politician, emerged victorious over two other aspirants during the primary exercise that concluded in the early hours of Sunday. The election was conducted by former Gombe State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, and was described as transparent and peaceful.
At the state party secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, party leaders emphasized that the selection of Oluyede represented the collective choice of the party members and leaders in Ekiti State. Among the attendees were former deputy governorship candidate Deji Ogunsakin, former state chairman Makanjuola Ogundipe, former speaker Kola Oluwawole, and former House of Representatives member Segun Adekola.
Ogunsakin stated that any efforts to change the decision of the majority delegates would be met with resistance. He argued that some internal forces within the party are uneasy with Oluyede as the candidate, claiming that they recognize his potential to secure victory against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party chieftain urged Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and other patriotic leaders of the party across the country to protect the mandate of the party members who cast their votes during the primaries. He accused certain factions of trying to undermine the PDP in the state before the next year’s elections, suggesting that the reported plans to overturn the primary results were orchestrated by anti-democratic elements.
Ogunsakin highlighted that after the successful, transparent, and fair primary, which resulted in Oluyede’s victory, there were reports of some internal forces attempting to reverse the outcome. He stressed that the party had chosen a candidate who could deliver victory in the upcoming election.
He also called for an end to external interference, stating that Ekiti people through the party had made their choice, and it was time to stop such interventions. He appealed to leaders in the South West and at the national level to accept and respect the decision to ensure the unity and peace of the party.
Reconciliation Efforts by Oluyede
In a move towards reconciliation, the PDP candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, met with one of the aspirants, Mrs. Funmilayo Ogun, at her campaign office. The Ikere-Ekiti-born medical expert praised Ogun for her tenacity and commitment to the growth of the party. He noted that her decision to congratulate him demonstrated her political maturity and sportsmanship.
Oluyede expressed his gratitude for Ogun’s call and emphasized that his visit to her campaign office was a gesture of appreciation for her support. He acknowledged that politics involves negotiation and that Ogun is a strong supporter of his campaign. He added that he did not win the primary due to being perfect or superior, but rather because of divine intervention.
Ogun responded by stating that she accepted the outcome of the primary as a way to promote peace and unity within the party ahead of the next election. She explained that while she had the means to take legal action, she chose to look the other way to maintain the party’s cohesion despite observed irregularities.
She also noted that not everyone in the party can be a governor at the same time, emphasizing that only one person can hold the position at any given time. Ogun confidently asserted that the PDP in Ekiti is alive, moving forward, and poised to win the upcoming gubernatorial election with Oluyede as their candidate.
