Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Unveils Vision for NPP Revitalization
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, has introduced a detailed strategy aimed at rejuvenating the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His plan focuses on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and promoting inclusivity as the NPP prepares for the upcoming presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
During a speech at the Asato Community Centre in the Akan Constituency of the Oti Region, Dr Bawumia addressed nearly 700 delegates. He presented what he called a “new deal for the NPP grassroots,” emphasizing empowerment, transparency, and equitable participation. According to him, the NPP’s electoral strength lies in its polling station executives and constituency-level coordinators, who deserve structured support and recognition for their commitment to the party’s success.
“Our grassroots are the lifeblood of the NPP. We must build a system that recognizes their sacrifices, supports their welfare, and gives them a direct stake in governance,” he stated.
Key Areas of Focus
Dr Bawumia’s blueprint outlines five key areas aimed at deepening internal cohesion and improving electoral outcomes:
-
Structured Welfare Database: He pledged to establish a structured welfare database to support polling station executives and electoral area coordinators. The system would undergo quarterly reviews to ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.
-
Decentralisation Drive: A proportion of national appointments—including positions such as CEOs, Ambassadors, Ministers, and Deputy Ministers—would be allocated to constituencies across the country. This measure is expected to create about 3,000 opportunities, strengthening the connection between government and the grassroots.
-
Constituency Budget System: Dr Bawumia proposed the introduction of a “Constituency Budget” system to empower local areas to directly address development priorities. This approach would shift national planning from a top-down model to one driven by local needs.
-
Regular Town Hall Meetings: To maintain unity and pre-empt discontent, he announced plans to institutionalize regular constituency-level town hall meetings. These forums would provide space to identify and resolve internal challenges before they escalated.
-
Reform of Election Financing: He vowed to reform the party’s election financing model by ensuring campaign funds were transferred directly into official constituency accounts. This would eliminate intermediaries, promote accountability, and guarantee that every cedi was used to support mobilisation efforts.
Commitment to Grassroots Empowerment
Mr Kofi Adjei Ntim, former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kadjebi, commended Dr Bawumia for his commitment to empowering the party’s grassroots. He highlighted the former Vice President’s vision, humility, and dedication to the NPP’s progress, qualities that make him well-placed to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
Mr Ntim urged delegates to rally behind Dr Bawumia to consolidate the NPP’s unity and build on the gains made over the years.
Support from Key Figures
Dr Bawumia was accompanied by several prominent figures, including Nana Akomea, former MP for Okaikoi South and a member of Bawumia’s Campaign Team, Dr Joshua Makubu, and DSP Daniel Machator (Rtd), both former Oti Regional Ministers. Other attendees included former MDCEs, former PCs, and other notable individuals.
The former Vice President’s campaign continues to gain momentum as the NPP prepares for its presidential primaries early next year.
