A Unique Initiative in Tokyo
In the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo, a unique initiative is making a difference in the lives of Ukrainian evacuees and their families. A local café, known as Cocorogoto Cafe, has launched a “children’s cafeteria” program, offering low-cost meals to children once a month. This initiative began in September and allows kids to enjoy a regular meal for just 500 yen (approximately $3.30). The program aims to provide relief to families who are struggling with daily challenges.
Supporting Ukrainian Evacuees
Cocorogoto Cafe typically serves adults and has become a vital support system for Ukrainians who arrived in Japan following the Russian invasion in 2022. The café serves as a meeting point where Ukrainians and Japanese individuals can interact and build connections. A counseling psychologist is always on hand to offer assistance and support to those in need.
The children’s cafeteria operates in collaboration with a nonprofit organization called Musubie. During an event held in October, four families consisting of 10 people participated in the program. They enjoyed dishes such as pasta and rice omelets. One mother shared her gratitude, stating, “With my husband coming home late and me just returning from maternity leave, I’m managing everything alone every evening. It’s a relief to have even one less chore to do.”
Empowering Ukrainian Workers
Nine Ukrainian evacuees currently work at the café. Many of them have lost their homes due to the ongoing conflict. The café not only provides employment but also helps these individuals learn the Japanese language and take care of their mental health. This supportive environment fosters a sense of community and belonging.
Victoria, a 24-year-old from Kyiv, works at the café. She expressed her feelings about the place, saying, “Everyone is so cute. It makes me think of my own family.” Her parents are now living in western Ukraine. Victoria shared her hopes for the future, stating, “I don’t know when I’ll see them next, but I hope it will be in the spring.”
